Manhunt underway after murder suspect Kevin Mason ‘mistakenly’ set free from Indiana jail

A manhunt was underway across Indiana Wednesday after an involuntary manslaughter suspect was released from prison — just two days after being locked up, authorities said.

Kevin Mason, 28, was “erroneously released” from the Marion County Detention Center in Indianapolis on Sept. 13 because of a booking error made by an inmate clerk, the sheriff’s office announced Tuesday.

The suspect had been in prison for two years before his arrest earlier this month on multiple warrants — including the 2021 shooting death of a 29-year-old man in Minnesota, who was charged with violating parole and possessing a firearm.

He was able to walk free when a clerk made the fatal mistake of issuing two holds on his file because he thought they were duplicate bookings, sheriff’s Col. James Martin said during a news conference.

The next day, another clerk in Minnesota failed to notice the mistake and withdrew the final arrest – allowing Mason to be released.

“Our clerk who checked it saw three Minnesota holds, obviously didn’t realize what he was doing,” Martin said.

“It was a critical mistake, a critical mistake. They are specifically identified by the original agency that did it. They have specific ID numbers, they are all different and the case numbers are all different.”

Two inmate clerks were fired because of the mistake, Martin said.

“This is a mistake. This should not happen. Mason should not be released from our custody. This was discovered shortly after he was released,” he added.

Before his arrest on September 11, Mason was wanted on second-degree murder charges in the 2021 fatal shooting of Dontevius Ahmad Catchings in the parking lot of Temple Shiloh in Minneapolis.

“For 27 months I’ve been trying to get some kind of justice and then now I feel like we’re back at square one,” the victim’s sister, Shannell Catchings, told FOX59.

“I think it’s not just Indiana’s fault, I think it’s Minnesota’s fault as well.”

“I don’t know what happened in that prison and even though the person was fired, it’s like, OK, we’re not relieved because at the end of the day, he’s still out,” he added.

Meanwhile, the authorities searching for Mason claim they accidentally kept his release quiet for nearly two weeks to maintain a “tactical advantage” over him.

Investigators fear Mason may have fled the state after his release.

“We believe he has clearly evaded law enforcement since 2021,” Martin said. “We believe that he is pretty good at what he does. We believe that someone, or obviously he has someone else who is funding him and helping to help him at this time. Even today, we believe that is what is happening.”

Mason is described as 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a tattoo of a cross under his right eye. He also has a “SUB” tattoo on his chest and an unidentified neck tattoo.
