Early Life

When Manuraj Singh Rajput was a child, he was encouraged by his mother to study music and sing. He started singing religious songs at the age of eleven in a local temple. Guru Rakesh Bansiwala Ji was Manuraj Singh Rajput’s first music teacher, who used to teach music at a temple named Bihari Ji in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. His music teacher and his musical skills are described by Manuraj Singh Rajput in one of his blog posts. Manuraj Singh Rajput wrote,

He ran a tea shop and the sweet sound of his flute in the temple still echoes today. When I learned a little from him, he started playing the flute in stories, hymns and temples. When the stage performance was given in the Bharatpur town hall, the audience gave a loud applause.”

To pursue a degree in engineering, Manuraj Singh Rajput was sent to Jaipur by his parents right after completing his schooling. According to Manuraj Singh, he got admission in Jaipur college, but he never went there to study. Manuraj Singh Rajput was so inclined towards music and singing that he left his college studies and went to Delhi to study music from his second music teacher Ravi Prasanna. His financial expenses were borne by his close friends, and Manuraj Singh Rajput once lied to his parents that he was studying in a regular college. In one of his writings, he wrote,

In my mind, the flute will resonate every day, so here I started learning the flute from master Sandeep Soni. During this time, friends in college helped a lot. They used to pay my fine with their pocket money. During training in B.Tech, I started lying at home and started training at Ravi Prasanna sir in Delhi. In two months of engineering training, I took ‘Flute’ training. The real struggle begins after this.”

Manuraj Singh Rajput learned music from Maihar Gharana music and also belongs to the same music. Manuraj Singh Rajput states in one of his blogs that he is a disciple of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia from Mumbai. Manuraj Singh Rajput further mentioned in his writings that Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia did not give acknowledgment to his gurukul easily. In the beginning, one has to learn basic musical skills and traits in a particular style from other gurukul teachers. Manuraj Singh Rajput states that he traveled nearly 1300 km from Bharatpur to Mumbai to enroll himself in Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s gurukul and learn the flute from him. He wrote,

Guruji did not give admission to anyone so easily, but the note I received from there, I would come to Bharatpur and practice it for six to eight hours every day. Panditji saw my magnificence and was happy. I told them that this is my last year of engineering, if I don’t get your support, then the engineering work will have to be done at the family’s will.”

Manuraj Singh Rajput further mentioned his struggle to enroll in Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s gurukul in Mumbai. He was highly motivated by Swami Vivekananda’s words and sayings during his struggle period. One of his favorite quotes is-

The day life is not difficult, the day you understand that you are on the wrong path”

He went on to write that he also got six months of flute training at Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia’s Orissa gurukul. From 2011 to 2015, Manuraj Singh Rajput received formal flute training from Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia at his Mumbai music gurukul.
