Actress Margot Robbie went viral after she was filmed using sign language with a Deaf fan last year.
The resurfaced clip only earned the “Barbie” star more praise as she tried to remember basic fingerspelling to communicate with fans.

It’s unclear when the Australian actress learned to finger-spel, but she went viral in 2022 after she was seen interacting with a Deaf fan during a 2022 red carpet appearance. The fan tried to give her a sheet containing a basic cheat sheet before she handed it over, saying, “I know that. I know.”
He then proceeded to sign the alphabet for fans. He seemed pretty smooth at first, but he quickly lost his cool after “Q, R, S…” leaving the fan to jump in and help him out. Robbie has never talked about his ability to use sign language before, but basic fingerspelling is usually taught in school.
Although fans mistakenly say that he uses American Sign Language, other fans feel that he uses British Sign Language or Australian Sign Language, since their alphabets, especially their vowels, are very similar. Since the “Suicide Squad” star is actually from Australia, it makes sense that he would use Australian Sign Language; however, this is not confirmed.

However, there are many dialects of Australian and New Zealand sign language, so it may not be recognizable to everyone. Another user shared a screenshot from Google showing that there are more than 300 sign languages used around the world. This varies from country to country and can differ in countries even where the same spoken language is spoken.
Regional dialects and accents also influence signs. Even in the United States, the meaning of a sign may change from the East Coast to the West Coast.
