According to Daily Mail, Robbie made an appearance on The Project, which was held on Tuesday night to promote his latest film, “Babylon.” During the event, he revealed the story behind his nickname “Maggot” and how long he’s had it.

Robbie revealed that he was given the nickname aged six after a substitute teacher made a mispronunciation when calling his name. He said, “I think a substitute teacher made a mistake during call-in and said ‘maggots,’ and everyone had a good laugh.”

Robbie continued, “You don’t get to pick a nickname. You are given to him.” The two-time Oscar nominee revealed that after it happened, she hoped her friends would forget about her by lunchtime, but that clearly didn’t happen.

Monday night’s event saw not only Robbie but her entire family and several friends show up to support the actress at the Sydney premiere of “Babylon.” During an interview with entertainment reporter Justin Hill, Robbie’s close friend standing behind him referred to him as “Maggot.”

The nickname was initially thought to be a dig at his first name or his love for the band Slipknot, whose fans call him “maggots,” until the actor clarified his roots.

Robbie seemed to take the unusual nickname in stride and turned to jump and wave at his friends enthusiastically. Turning to the reporter, he revealed they were his childhood friends. “I saw my school friend. We’ve been friends since we were four years old,” said Robbie.

Fans Think He’s Very Down To Earth Because Of His Reaction

Hill, who was interviewing Robbie at the time, posted the video on social media and comments from fans of the actress poured in. Some call her down to earth, while others call her adorable and all the while “wholesome.” The comment read, “She looks so comfortable and happy.” Hill replied, “He’s beaming all the time, beautiful to look at.”

“Amazed they screamed his childhood nickname too lmfao i love him,” another TikTok comment read. “He doesn’t care [being] interviewed; let him go,” said one fan.

Some followers even criticized the Hills for trying to continue the interview instead of letting Robbie go to her friends. They wrote, “The interviewer really missed out on being a part of something unique and special. Keep trying to get back to something that’s already on the record. Lame.”

In a previous interview on “The Graham Norton Show,” Robbie talked about filming “Babylon” and how he was afraid of ruining the movie’s opening party scene. It reportedly took two weeks to film. He recalls, “It was a wild ride. There were amazing sets, including a party scene that took two weeks to shoot.”

“Every part of it is crazy, and the pressure level is scary because there’s so much going on, and I don’t want to be the one to screw it up,” Robbie continued.

The film is set in 1920s Hollywood and showcases the rise and fall of several ambitious personalities. Robbie plays Nellie LaRoy, a young starlet involved in the partying, self-destructive drugs and sexual encounters associated with the industry. Famous actors Brad Pitt, Tobey Maguire, Olivia Wilde, and Phoebe Tonkin are also part of the film.

Robbie previously spoke about how he had to go off script to get a kiss from his co-star Pitt in an impromptu scene. “How else will I get a chance to kiss her?” the actor told E! News.
