Mariah Carey Reveals Why She ‘Can’t Help’ But Be A ‘Diva’

Grammy-winning singer Mariah Carey recently clarified her diva image. The artist is known for releasing several hits, including his timeless hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Since its release in 1994, the song continues to be a crowd favorite, especially during the festive season.

Due to her popularity during Christmas, Carey reportedly tried to trademark the term “Queen of Christmas.” Unfortunately for him, stars like Elizabeth Chan and other Christmas artists opposed his request. The court did not rule in his favor and told him that “Christmas Princess” was also not discussed.

Mariah Carey Says She’s Playing Up Her Diva Image

Mariah Carey was all smiles while heading to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in NYCMEGA

In a telephone conversation with W Magazine, Carey talks about her diva image and how she sometimes plays it up. In an interview published Friday, the artist said, “There are things that people don’t realize because this whole quote-unquote ‘diva’ thing is always what people see first.”

Carey continued, “Yeah, I played into it. And yeah, some of it was real. I couldn’t help it. Like, what do you do if you grow up an opera singer for a mom who went to Juilliard and made her debut at Lincoln Center ?”

The “Without You” artist further revealed that her diva personality is a response to how she was raised in addition to “love.” Carey’s mother and father are Alfred Roy, and Patricia Carey. His mother was an opera singer with the New York City Opera, while Alfred worked as an aeronautical engineer.

Carey’s mother is white, while her father is a mix of black and Hispanic. During a phone call conversation with W Magazine, the mother of two revealed that growing up as a biracial girl in a predominantly white neighborhood, she felt “other”. The artist goes on to describe his childhood as “very dysfunctional,” enough that he’s surprised he made it out of it.

Despite her name as the Queen of Christmas, Carey admits that her Christmases as a child were far from good. She said, “People think I have this princess-style life or whatever, some sort of fairytale existence where I just appear, like, ‘Here I am!’ And that’s not what happened.”

Carey stated that her less-than-savory background made her more determined that her children, Morocco and Monroe, would have the best she could give them. “But when you grow up with a messed up life, and then you can have this transformation where you can make your life the way you want it to be? That’s the joy for me,” said the singer. “That’s why I want my children to have everything they can have.”

This year, Carey made her Christmas appearance before the holidays. The Grammy-winning artist participated in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which took place in New York City on Thursday. Dressed in an eye-catching festive red dress, Carey performed her all-time hit, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

The singer wore a Cristian Siriano tulle gown with a pencil skirt design and a dramatic mermaid silhouette. Carey made the eye-catching dress more dramatic with a beaded and glittery umbrella and silver tiara. Fans seemed enthralled by the singer’s outfit and shared her pictures on social media with admiring comments.

She Tried To Trademark The ‘Queen Of Christmas’ Title

Earlier this month, Page Six reported that Carey had tried and failed to trademark the name “Queen of Christmas” ahead of the holidays. The US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruled against his attempt and declared that he could not trademark “Christmas Princess” either.

Carey’s company, Lotion LLC, is behind the filing in an effort to use the term in its line of merchandise, which includes fragrances, albums, sunglasses and several others. Full-time pop Christmas recording artist Chan, however, filed a protest against the artist earlier this year. Darlene Love also supported the opposition.

After winning the case, Chan’s lawyer Louis Tompros called Carey’s actions “a classic case of trademark bullying.” He continued, “We are delighted with the win and delighted that we were able to help Elizabeth fight back against Carey’s overreaching trademark registration.”

Also talk to Page Six on the case said, “I did this to protect and save Christmas. Christmas isn’t about one person — it’s about everyone. I have dedicated my life to understanding how special this Christmas is. It’s hard to be a stand-up person.
