The Motown singer made headlines at the top of the year when he allegedly pulled a gun on his estranged wife and her cousin in their home. Unsurprisingly, this is the day listed as the separation date for the end of their union.
According to new legal documents, obtained by The Blast, Marvin Gaye filed for divorce in LA County Court, listing the reason for his separation as “irreconcilable differences.” In the filing, Gaye said the couple separated on January 12, 2023, the exact day he was accused of domestic violence. It should be noted, he also asked Wendy not to get spousal support.
Wendy has reportedly obtained a restraining order against her soon-to-be ex-husband in connection with pulling a gun. She claims that Marvin III physically assaulted her, allegedly lifting her off the ground by her neck, then attacking her female cousin who tried to intervene.

At that time, police were called to the incident and reports claimed Marvin III fled the scene. Marvin III was issued an order of protection and asked not to return to the home where the incident occurred and the family members he allegedly assaulted. The police also returned to the house after the incident and found two firearms.
He later turned himself in and was released on a $50k bond. The two do not share children so child support cannot be disputed. Although Marvin III has two sons from a previous relationship, Marvin Gaye IV, born in 1995, and Dylan born in 2000. Wendy and the son of the legendary singer have no children together.
The 57-year-old is the adopted son of legendary singer Marvin Gaye II and his wife Anna Gordy. The couple were struggling to conceive and when Anna realized that her niece Denise Gordy was pregnant at 16 and unable to care for her, the couple stepped in.
The “What’s Going On” singer was murdered in 1984 by his own father Marvin Gaye Sr. at the age of 44 a day before his 45th birthday. The argument allegedly took place over a confession shared by MG II with his elderly father.
Not much is known about MG III and Wendy’s marriage but family attorney Gil Arbel has revealed that Wendy and her cousin are “disappointed” and that they “intend to cooperate fully with law enforcement in pressing charges.”
