The 55-year-old shared several pictures of himself with his four daughters as he reflected on how grateful he was for the support of his family and friends when he was fighting for his life in the ICU just a few weeks ago.

In an Instagram carousel featuring photos of her with her family, Mary Lou Retton wrote, “Happy Thanksgiving,” adding, “As we come together to celebrate this Thanksgiving, my heart overflows with deep gratitude. I want to express how truly blessed I am and grateful to be slowly getting better and to be home with my daughters, especially after my hospital stay.”

“The love and support of my four amazing daughters has been a source of strength and inspiration throughout my journey. Their presence in my life is proof of the extraordinary family bond,” he continued. “My extended family, all of you, have shown me immeasurable kindness, offering prayers, encouragement, and unwavering support as I faced challenges. Your love has become a beacon of hope in my life.”

The retired gymnast went on to say, “I also want to thank my Foxy family for always being there for me. Your friendship and support have been a constant source of comfort and joy. McKenna Kelly, Mary Lou Retton’s daughter, took to her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, October 10, to reveal that her mother is battling “a very rare form of pneumonia” and is “fighting for her life” in the ICU.

He created a Spotfund page to fund his mother’s hospital stay, which received over $50,000 dollars from hundreds of donors. “My incredible mother, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life,” he wrote in the appeal. “He can’t breathe on his own. He has been in the ICU for over a week. To respect him and his privacy, I will not reveal all the details. However, I will disclose that he is not insured.”

He went on to say, “We ask that if you can help in any way, 1) you PRAY! and 2) if you can help us financially for hospital bills. ANYTHING, anything at all, would greatly help my family and my mom. Thank you very much!”

“I appreciate everyone’s respect for my privacy at this time,” he continued. “When the time comes, I will share more information about my health issues and hope that I can help others who are facing the same battle as me. I love you all.”
