Actor Matthew Perry has opened up about leaving “Don’t Look Up” amid his addiction struggles.

The actor, who was scheduled to play a supporting role in the 2021 Netflix film, had to drop out of the project due to health issues. In an excerpt from her upcoming book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry describes a situation where her opiate addiction nearly took her life. He also cited how his heart stopped beating during the preparation for surgery.

The actor, who has a long history of abusing opiates, revealed that he tried to trick doctors into giving him painkillers. Although she was not actually in pain, she made up a narrative of severe stomach discomfort that led the doctor to give her hydrocodone.

Physicians also informed Perry that surgery was necessary to fully address her pain problem. Before the surgery, he was given the anesthetic propofol, which caused his heart to stop beating because he had been on hydrocodone from the night before.

“I was hit at 11:00 in the morning,” Perry said in an excerpt from his memoir, per E! News.” I woke up eleven hours later in a different hospital. Apparently, the propofol had stopped my heart. For five minutes. It wasn’t a heart attack—I wasn’t flat—but nothing was beating.”

Upon realizing he was no longer breathing, the medical staff went into full emergency mode and tried to save him.

The actress wrote, “I was told that some fat Swiss guy really didn’t want the guy from Friends to die on his desk and did CPR on me for five whole minutes, hitting and punching my chest,” she added. “If I wasn’t on Friends, would he stop at three minutes? Did Kavan save my life again?”

However, the actor ended up breaking eight ribs due to the pressure applied during CPR. Pain from the injury prevented Perry from returning to the set of “Don’t Look Up”, prompting him to make the “heartbreaking” decision to leave the project. The actor managed to shoot one scene, which was eventually deleted from the final cut.

Another bad experience Perry writes about in his upcoming memoir is how his weight dropped to 128 pounds because of his addiction. The actor also shared that he popped 55 Vicodin tablets a day at the height of his addiction, along with copious amounts of booze.

His drug use eventually resulted in gastrointestinal perforation, which landed him in the ICU with a survival rate of only 2%. The actor ended up spending five months in hospital at the time, with the first two weeks being in a coma. She also had to go through the discomfort of using a colostomy bag for nine months.

“I’m pretty good right now,” Perry opened up Many people in a recent interview, confirmed he has fully recovered since the incident. “I don’t have to go to the gym anymore, because I don’t want to just be able to play superheroes. But no, I’m a pretty healthy man now.”

Perry’s memoir is slated to debut on November 1, 2022, and will shed further light on other experiences in the actor’s life besides his addiction struggles.

In his interview with many people, Perry shared that he wrote the book to help other individuals in similar situations. He also explained why he held back from telling his story for a while.

“I want to share when I’m safe from going to the dark side of everything again,” the actress revealed to the outlet. “I had to wait until I was safe enough – and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction – to write it all down. And the main thing is, I’m pretty sure that it will help people.”
