After skipping the late Matthew Perry from their In Memoriam segment and receiving backlash on social media, BAFTA retraced their steps.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts released a statement saying they will include a tribute to the late “Friends” star at their next awards ceremony.
Perry died at his home last year from the acute effects of ketamine and other drugs. He was honored during the In Memoriam segment at the recent 2023 Emmy Awards. Other cast members from “Friends” have also collectively and individually paid tribute to him in the months since his death.

In response to widespread criticism of Perry’s lack of respect at the awards ceremony, a BAFTA spokesperson told People’s Magazine that they “can confirm Matthew Perry will be remembered at our upcoming BAFTA Television Awards.”
The Academy reiterated this stance in their statement released to X. It read, “Matthew Perry will be remembered at this year’s TV Awards.”
The tweet also included a link to their online tribute to Perry, which unfortunately did not go down well with fans on the social media platform.
Many users pointed out that his absence from the In Memoriam segment was insulting and that the online tribute was insufficient.
They also point out that Perry is an actor in her own right, although her most famous role is Chandler Bing on the hit TV show, “Friends.”
In the comments of BAFTA’s post, they further shared their anger at the omission. One fan wrote, “But he’s also a movie star!” While another comment read, “Matthew Perry makes a lot of movies … That’s a bad decision,” and referenced his movie, “The Whole Nine Yards.”

After her death was announced, Perry was buried in a private funeral in Los Angeles. Media reports revealed that the actor’s funeral was attended by family and close friends, including five of his “Friends” co-stars.
Perry was only engaged once, never married, and never had children. The actor’s death caused many “Friends” fans to travel far and wide to visit the New York City apartment where his character, Chandler Bing, lived.

Since Perry’s death, he has been honored by various individuals and award bodies throughout the film industry.
During the 2023 Emmy Awards, the actress was included in the In Memoriam segment, with her photo shown as singer Charlie Puth performed his song, “See You Again.” The song later became the famous theme song for “Friends,” “I’ll Be There for You.”
At the time of her death, Perry’s friends and co-stars from “Friends” released a joint statement about her passing. It read, “There is much to say, but for now we will take some time to grieve and process this unexpected loss.”
After the joint statement, the cast, including Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Lisa Kudrow, Courtney Cox, and David Schwimmer, individually paid tribute to their late friend.
