The actress’ autobiography “Friends, Lovers, and The Big Terrible Thing” has become a bestseller almost exactly a year after its release, replacing “The Woman In Me” at the top of Amazon’s charts. Perry’s memoir chronicles not only her time on “Friends” but also her long struggle with addiction.
In his book, Perry admits that he has spent over $9 million trying to get sober and claims that he has attended over six thousand AA meetings. He said that he went to rehab fifteen times and detoxed on 65 different occasions, as per the Daily Mail.
In the book’s prologue, Perry wrote, “I should have died,” adding, “My mind wanted to kill me, and I knew it. I was always filled with a lurking loneliness, a longing, clinging to the notion that something outside of myself would fix me.”
On the set of his movie “Fools Rush In,” Perry was hospitalized from a jet ski accident and later became addicted to Vicodin. He claims that he started taking 55 Vicodin pills a day and saw his weight drop to 128 pounds during the height of his addiction. His battle with addiction didn’t just take a toll on his mental health. In 2000, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis. In 2018, his colon ruptured.

During an interview for her book, Perry told Diane Sawyer that doctors told her family that she “had a 2 percent chance of living.”
“I was put on something called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and lungs. And that’s called Hail Mary. No one survived that,” he explained, adding that he was in a coma for two weeks. He spent five months in hospital and then used a colostomy bag for nine months. The actor admitted that he was only conscious for one of the ten seasons of “Friends” and described his cast members as “understanding” and “patient” in his autobiography.
In 2021, a year before her memoir was released, she said she committed to living a healthier lifestyle. In an interview with People magazine, Perry reflected on the writing of the book. “It was all gone from me,” he recalls. “The book was not difficult to write. It’s a harder thing to read, because you go, ‘Wow, this is a terrible story.’ But there’s a sense of humor running through it.”
On Saturday, Matthew Perry was announced dead at the age of 54 after being found at his Pacific Palisades home. He was in his hot tub when his assistant found him unresponsive and tried to save him, according to new reports. A law enforcement source told TMZ that the actor’s body was not “submerged” when emergency services arrived at the scene, where he was pronounced dead.
