Mayawati is an Indian Politician and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was once the President of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). He has served as the 17th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. She is commonly referred to as Bahen Ji, Kumari Mayawati, and the Iron Woman by her followers and well wishers. She is considered one of the most powerful women politicians in India.

Mayawati was born on 15 January 1956 (Age: 63 Years, as of 2019) in a Hindu Scheduled Caste family in New Delhi, India. His father, Prabhu Das, served as a post office worker in Badalpur, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his education from Delhi University and received his BA and LLB degrees. He completed B.Ed from VMLG College, Ghaziabad. After completing his education, he used to teach in Inderpuri JJ Colony, Delhi and also prepared for Civil Services Exams. An Author, Ajay Bose wrote in his book, Behenji: A Political Biography of Mayawati, that in 1977, the future founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party, Kanshi Ram, visited her family and told her, “I can make you a great person. leader one day that not one but a whole line of IAS officers will be lining up for your order.”

Mayawati was born to Prabhu Das and Ram Rati. He has only one sibling, his brother Anand Kumar who is also a politician.

Career
When Kanshi Ram founded the BSP in 1984, Mayawati was in his team. In his first election campaign, he was nominated by the BSP for the Kairana Lok Sabha seat of Muzaffarnagar district. He received his first victory in the 1989 General Election and became the representative for Bijnor in the Lok Sabha. He defeated Janata Dal’s Mangal Ram Premi by a margin of 8,879 votes. In 1994, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. After a merger with the Samajwadi Party, Mayawati became the State Chief Minister for the first time, but her government lasted only for a short period. In the 1996 General Election, he won two constituencies but served as Member of Parliament for Harora. In 1997, he became the Chief Minister again but only for a short period. Due to the BJP-BSP alliance, he again served as the Chief Minister from 3 May 2002 to 29 August 2003 until the BJP withdrew its support.

On 18 September 2003, he was elected as the next BSP President after Kanshi Ram. He became the Chief Minister of the state in 2007 for the fourth time and completed his first full term in 2012.
Controversy
- In 2002, his name appeared in the Taj Corridor Scam, where he and a minister in his government, Nasimuddin Siddiqui, were charged with corruption. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 175 crore. Mayawati is accused of embezzling money earmarked for the project.
- He was criticized for his rising assets. In 2003, his assets were worth Rs 1 crore but in 2007, they were worth more than Rs 50 crore and in 2012, they were over Rs 111 crore.
- During his tenure as Chief Minister, he became the center of controversy for investing huge sums of money in building parks, memorials, statues, galleries, etc. The project was heavily criticized in the media and by other political parties for excessive spending.
- Mayawati has also been criticized for mismanaging the World Bank Fund.
- In 2010, she picked up the pieces for being garlanded with garlands worth more than Rs 22 crore.
- WikiLeaks revealed that when he was Chief Minister, he sent an empty private jet to get a pair of sandals of a certain brand from Mumbai. This news became a discussion in the media and caused a great controversy.
- In March 2019, the Supreme Court asked him to explain the money spent on his elephant statues and sculptures.
