Mayim Bialik Explains Why She Will NEVER Compete On ‘Jeopardy!’

Actress Mayim Bialik has absolutely no plans to compete in “Jeopardy!” even hosting a game show with “Greatest of All Time” tournament winner Ken Jennings.

Although “The Big Bang Theory” actor has been talking about neuroscience for years, he doesn’t think he’ll perform well because of the “psychological” pressure of competing against others on a tight time limit.

In an interview with Bill Maher on his Club Random podcast, the “Blossom” child star admitted that she “would cry” if she ever competed on the game show, despite hosting it for over two years now. “There’s a beat that a winner goes through – there’s a big psychological component,” Mayim said. “If you get something wrong, it can be debilitating. I’m going to cry, I think.

He also clarified that he played no role in posing the question. “People ask if I know all that stuff, and I’m like, ‘no.’ No,” he said. “Answering something like that under pressure with a timer is just not going to happen for me. It’s hard!”

He also admitted that “Jeopardy!” players who perform well in the show also have knowledge in various fields, where their expertise is more specific. “The knowledge I have is not necessarily Jeopardy knowledge. I’m trained in science, and I’m a crossword puzzler,” he said. Although he admitted that he might do well in certain subjects because of his familiarity with “Hebrew and Jewish studies,” he said that “18th-century British poets” would be the topics he would tackle.

Mayim Bialik shared co-hosting duties with Ken Jennings, although she left the show temporarily in May to show solidarity for the WGA writers’ strike, which ended in September. Although he hosted the first season of “Celebrity Jeopardy!”, Ken Jennings is also taking over hosting duties for season 2. Now that the writers’ strike is over, it remains to be seen if he will return to host a potential third season, although the show has yet to renewed.

Both Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings were named co-hosts of “Jeopardy!” following the death of late host Alex Trebek, who died of pancreatic cancer in November 2020.

Although both Ken and Mayim have faced backlash for the way they have carried out their hosting duties, executive producer Michael Davies has made it clear that “the show is difficult to host” and has thrown his support behind the two co-hosts.

In a May 2023 interview with Vulture, Michael Davies said, “This show is really hard to host,” adding, “Alex made it on his own… I read everything, and look, the strongest thing we have is passion for the fans us. I hope a lot of our fans are more patient in understanding that we are dealing with two hosts.”

“Mayim is a very experienced actor. Ken is a very experienced ‘Jeopardy’. players. They’re both at the start of their hosting careers,” Davies continued, adding, “I’m going to do everything I can to make this happen.” He also explained that he takes the feedback he gets from fans very “seriously.”

Davies declined to say whether Ken or Mayim performed better with the audience. “In terms of the small percentage of our audience that uses Reddit or Twitter, there are Ken fans and there are Mayim fans. There are some people who like ‘Jeopardy!’ and will watch both. We also had multiple fans posting that they didn’t like one of them.”

However, it depends on the ratings, Davies insists it makes “zero difference” who hosts and says it’s “exactly the same” depending on whether Ken or Mayim hosts.

While there are some fans who would like to see Ken step off the podium and compete again, Ken recently revealed that he has retired from competing. When asked about Ken’s retirement, Michael Davies said that he would “really” like to see Ken face his old opponent James Holzhauer.

“Ken told me directly that he was retired Danger!. I understand why no one hosted can play anymore. But Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus played the Masters long after they hosted the tournament at the PGA,” explained Davies, comparing “Jeopardy!” to playing golf. “I’m probably more open to the idea than other people, but that’s not going to be my decision. Is I want to see Ken and James play again? Really. We’ll see.”
