Mayim Bialik Responds To Melanie Hutsell’s Apology Over Fake Nose Controversy

Actress Mayim Bialik finally got an apology after criticizing her 1994 “Blossom” sketch on “Saturday Night Live” that picked her nose.

The sitcom features Melanie Hutsell playing Mayim’s main character, Blossom. Mike Myers and Sara Gilbert also participated in the sketch, but Melanie was the only one wearing a fake nose that made “The Big Bang Theory” alum feel “embarrassed” by her appearance.

In 1994, Melanie Hutsell was the only one to wear a “big fake nose” to portray Mayim Bialik’s character Blossom during a sitcom sketch on “Saturday Night Live.”

“The actor who portrays me dances and mugs for the camera and he’s funny,” Mayim recently told Variety. “But. He wears a fake nose. To really convey that she’s ‘Blossom,’ she wears a big fake nose.”

“I don’t know if it’s bigger than my real nose and I don’t care to remember it. I remember that it struck me as odd. And it confuses me. No one else on the show was parodied because of their characteristics,” he continued. “In MAD magazine, everyone is caricatured, but in this parody, only I was chosen. More specifically, it’s my nose.”

“Jeopardy!” the co-host also explained why he never addressed the incident until now. “I never thought to talk about it and mostly I tried to forget it. I hope no one notices,” he said, adding, “All my friends in high school watch SNL. It’s not subtle. They will all see it and I feel embarrassed.”

She also wondered how other women would feel seeing how she was portrayed. “Girls all over the world used to tell me that they had never seen a Jewish girl like me on TV before they saw me in Blossom,” she explained. “Many said they knew I was Jewish and it made them proud. That really touched my heart, and still… I wonder how the girls felt when they saw an actor playing me with a funny fake nose.”

“I’ve had a lot of conversations with myself about my nose over the past 40 years. I didn’t always like it, but I never wanted to change it either,” he added. “My nose is undeniably Jewish, and so am I. Is it because of my nose? perhaps. But I don’t need to know because we will always be one and the same.”

Following the statement, Melanie Hutsell told Entertainment Weekly, “I was absolutely horrified that they wanted me to wear a fake nose to play Mayim Bialik’s character, Blossom. I know it’s wrong.” She went on to claim that producers threatened to fire her if she refused to wear it, adding, “I remember so clearly that when I said I didn’t want to wear a fake nose for a sketch, I was told if I refused, I’d be fired.”

Melanie also said that she apologized to Mayim about ten years after the sketch happened. “The whole situation haunted me for years, but thankfully I had the opportunity at an audition about ten years after the fact to look Mayim in the eye and apologize for what I did, to which she replied, ‘I let you go!’ I take that to mean that he accepts my apology and that means more to me than he’ll ever know.”

Fortunately, it seems his apology was accepted. “Thank you Melanie Hutsell for this – I did not mean to disparage you or SNL and I really appreciate your concern on this matter!” Mayim wrote on Instagram. “It made for an interesting essay (which I was asked to write a few months ago on the topic of antisemitism) and with everything going on in the world, I almost hugged you and appreciated you!”

Fortunately for “Blossom” fans, the 47-year-old actress recently opened up about plans for the reboot after stating that the original creators and most of the cast are eager for the sitcom to return in an entirely new format.
