Career
When he was in 9th grade, he did a rap battle for the first time. During his breaks, he used to practice rapping with his friends. In an interview, talking about his school days, Kode said,
I was going up against 12th graders and I was the first to step out with a stage name. Back then the scene was so young that I had to create fighters to fight because there was hardly anyone in the scene or scene at all. At first, people didn’t take it seriously but now I have a lot of messages saying they are proud of me.”
He has participated in more than eighty rap battles (as of 2021), and, soon, he became famous in the world of rap battles. Some of his popular rap songs are ‘Pareshan’ (2020), ‘Rasta’ (2020), ‘Doob’ (2020), and ‘Kheecho’ (2021).
MC Kode is also the co-founder of Spit Dope Inc., a movement that organizes battles to give underground hip hop a wider reach. During an interview, talking about his early days as a rap fighter, he said,
There was a time when we were amateurs, wearing loose clothes and fighting in the streets. Anyone can post a status on the internet that calls people to war. So I was at this cypher at Hauz Khas and there I met Encore ABJ and this other rapper MC Snub who invited us for another cypher and then we thought that if we meet every week as it is, why not do it under a name. That’s when we started Spit Dope and anyone can be a part of it. Everything happens spontaneously. Also, it is highly unrealistic that something that started in Brooklyn happened in the context of India. I don’t think it’s started properly yet because Spit Dope isn’t an entity, it’s a movement. It started with four boys fighting in a park and then we had a sell-out event in Bombay.”
Aside from participating in rap battles, he has judged and hosted rap battles across the country. In the interview, he shared how battle rap has gotten involved in recent years. He said,
We were all in a hurry. In the early years, it was easier for me because I earned a lot through college competitions. I will win the competition and invest money into the culture, in Spit Dope, to make it more efficient. I have a call center job even though it may not be legal for me to have one. Tenang works as a promoter in Hauz Khas, so we all struggle to make ends meet.”
Controversy
- In one of his rap battles, he fought against BK, the son of a political leader in Tripura, where he rapped some unsavory lines against the politician. Soon, he started receiving threatening calls from various cities in India. In an interview, Kode said,
Someone found my college and called, looking for information. I then got two more police phone calls from the North East [of India] threaten me, before I get one from here [in New Delhi].”
- In 2021, his old rap battle video, originally released on June 12, 2016, on YouTube went viral. He received great criticism and hatred from netizens for using abusive and Hinduphobic words in the video. Some lines from the video are,
If you are a Hindu, I will sleep your Gau, I will inspect your sacred cow…I will rage the raja**bate pillar on the Mahabharata, Geeta Geeta.”
Soon after the video went viral, she started getting threatening calls and abusive comments. Later, he released an apology video and posted on his Instagram account where he asked to delete all his videos and songs from the live streaming app and YouTube. He later shared a cryptic post on his Instagram account in which he hinted at suicide, and since then, he has been missing from his hometown, New Delhi.
Later, on Twitter, an image of a dead body went viral that a Twitter user claimed to be MC Kode, and after further research, it turned out to be fake. After a week-long search, the Delhi police located him in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur on June 9, 2021. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Atul Thakur, the rapper was found at his friend’s house in Jabalpur where he arrived on June 2 himself.
Facts/Trivia
- To cover his financial expenses in school and college, he worked in a call center from class 10 till his graduation.
- In an interview, he shared that he was inspired to start rapping after watching the Hollywood movie ‘8 Mile’ (2002). He said,
This movie inspired a lot of people, maybe because at that time, you knew what kind of music was being made. There are not many artists in this country who have something meaningful to say. But that’s the power of hip hop. That a middle-aged white man is talking about his problems relating to a brown child all over the world is beautiful.
- After her video controversy in 2021, she deleted all her Instagram posts, and her YouTube channel was also deleted.
- He is often seen smoking in his live videos and interviews.
- He has a ’51’ tattoo on the left side of his neck.
- Kode considers Indian rapper ‘Smoke’ as one of the best battle rappers.
- He also used to teach rap at the hip hop free school ‘The Dharavi Dream Project.’ During the interview, he talked about the project. He said,
The first thing I like to do is sensitivity training. In India, it is easy to cross the line, we have to realize that we live in a country where there are many thin skinned people. We have to understand what kind of jokes and roasts we can or can’t make.”
- In an interview, he shared why he kept his stage name MC Kode. He said,
I like to think my code is more ethical than the average performer. To me, they are like survival instincts. I also did a lot of coding back in the day so I guess it came from there but turned into this.
