McCarthy blasts Biden, says he ‘destroyed’ border, demands House briefing on ‘chaos’

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy lashed out at President Joe Biden over the immigration crisis plaguing New York City, claiming the commander-in-chief has “destroyed our borders.”

In an interview Sunday with John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM’s The Cats Roundtable, McCarthy said New York’s immigrant crisis is a prime example of the devastation caused by lax border and immigration policies.

“The other major factor that Biden is doing is destroying our borders,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said.

“New York is far from the Mexican border. It is closer to the Canadian border. But you see the problems, the challenges that affect here.”

McCarthy also pointed to CNN’s report that smugglers coming through the border have ties to ISIS — and demanded a brief Congressional White House on the border crisis.

He said the reports coming out ahead of the 22nd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were very sad.

“I am asking all Members of Congress to get a confidential briefing on the chaos on our southern border. “With the alarming record of people on terrorist watch lists — including some tied to ISIS — all Americans should be deeply concerned that terrorists could enter our country,” the House speaker said in a separate statement on Xformerly known as Twitter and links to McCarthy’s interview on Sirius radio.

“People come from 160 countries. They bring in fentanyl,” he told Catsimatidis.

He also pointed out that more people on the terrorism watch list had been arrested on the southern border than in the previous four years combined.

“Right now, we don’t know what happened. The cartels have taken over,” he declared.

Between April 2022 and the end of July, more than 125,000 immigrants headed to the five counties, according to data on zip codes where immigrants told US Customs and Border Protection they planned to settle. The city is on track to spend a staggering $40,000 per immigrant on shelter and other care — more than any other city, The Post has reported.

Adams estimates the crisis will cost the city $5 billion by the end of the current fiscal year and $12 billion over three years.

He ordered all city agencies to come up with 5% to 15% in cost cutting to help deal with it.

McCarthy also grilled Biden over his administration’s emphasis on green energy policies instead of making America energy independent.

“We want to be energy independent … That makes the environment better,” McCarthy said of efforts to combat climate change.

“We’ve been able to lower our emissions around the world based on American natural gas,” he said. “If we replace Russian natural gas in Europe for one year… that would reduce 215,000,000 tons of emissions, because our natural gas is 41% cleaner than Russian natural gas. The other part … if you buy it from America, we’re going to create more American jobs.”

“The Biden administration has come in and attacked the energy business,” he said. “[It] only wants renewable energy and not all-of-the-above” such as nuclear power, natural gas and wind and solar power.

“[It] makes energy prices higher… makes inflation higher, because gasoline prices are now higher,” McCarthy stressed. “The price of jet fuel is higher. Inflation is compounded, so your food costs more. This is made by [Biden’s] policies that attack American energy. It doesn’t mean we buy less. It means we bought it from our enemy.”

The White House had no immediate comment on McCarthy’s criticism.

But a White House official last week defended the administration’s border policy, saying Biden is sending Congress legislation to reform “our broken immigration system.” Republicans refused to pass it.

Meanwhile, Rep. Elise Stefanik, who represents upstate New York communities along the Canadian border, called the immigrant crisis a “catastrophe” created by Biden and Democrats who support illegal immigrants — and pushed back against efforts to expedite immigrant work permits.

“Let’s take a step back. Mayor Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul support the sanctuary city policy,” the chairman of the House Republican Conference told The Post. “There’s a reason that New York is being overrun and it’s because of the border crisis and it’s because of the illegal transfer of undocumented immigrants into New York state.”

“They’re trying to move these illegal immigrants to upstate New York. Upstate – not just New York Republicans but Democrats as well – at the elected level are speaking out against this.”

“This is a disaster… created by the Democrats in New York state,” he added. “And they’re going to feel pain at the ballot box because 81% of New Yorkers … are very concerned and think this is a serious issue facing New York.”
