McCarthy claimed Trump was depressed, stopped eating after 2020 loss, Cheney’s book says

Stung by his defeat in the 2020 election, Donald Trump allegedly stopped eating and became depressed after his departure from the White House, prompting his staff to encourage Rep. Kevin McCarthy visited her at her Florida estate, according to a forthcoming book by her former House colleague Liz Cheney.

McCarthy (R-Calif.) reportedly made the claim while defending his trip to Mar-a-Lago three weeks after the Capitol riots on Jan. 6, 2021.

Angered by the visit, then-House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) confronted him about the trip.

“Mar-a-Lago? What the hell, Kevin?” Cheney reprimanded, according to his forthcoming book previewed by CNN.

“They’re really worried,” McCarthy replied. “Trump didn’t eat, so they asked me to meet him.”

“What? You go to Mar-a-Lago because Trump doesn’t eat?” asked Cheney.

“Yeah, he’s really depressed,” McCarthy replied.

Cheney also accused McCarthy of lying repeatedly. Trump’s spokesman vehemently denied the story.

“Liz Cheney is a loser who is now lying to sell books that either belong in the cheap fiction section or should be reused as toilet paper,” campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told The Post.

“This is nothing more than a completely fabricated story because President Trump is the clear frontrunner to be the Republican nominee and the strongest candidate to defeat Crooked Joe Biden. Liz is clearly suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome and needs to deal with fundamental issues in her own personal life.”

McCarthy’s spokesman echoed many of those sentiments against Cheney, but stopped short of flat denial.

“For Cheney, first it was Trump Delirium Syndrome, and now it appears to be McCarthy Delirium Syndrome as well,” the spokesman said.

McCarthy was angry with Trump on January 6, 2021, when rioters ransacked the Capitol, according to CNN.

In a local radio interview a few days later, McCarthy recounted a phone call with the former president amid the riots.

“I was the first person to contact him,” he said on KERN. “I asked the president, he has a responsibility. You know what the president does, but you know what? All we do.”

On January 28, 2021, McCarthy descended on Trump’s prized Palm Beach estate and appeared to mend things with GOP heavyweights.

The pair discussed topics such as strategies for Republicans to recapture their majority in the House of Representatives, according to public statements at the time.

The meeting has been widely maligned by critics of Democrats and Cheney, who served as vice chairman of the now-defunct Select Committee on January 6.

A few months later, in May 2021, Cheney was appointed Chairman of the House Republican Conference, House Republican slot No. 3 at the time.

McCarthy was ousted as speaker last month in a coup praised by Cheney.

His book, “Oath and Honor” is set to hit bookshelves on Dec. 5.
