McCarthy-connected PACs dropped millions on Republicans who booted him from speakership

A political action group affiliated with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is shelling out millions — to support the same Republicans who ousted him on Tuesday.

Just last year, the California congressman’s coalition leadership PAC contributed nearly $100,000 among the eight members of Congress who voted to remove him as Speaker just three days shy of his 9-month anniversary at the helm.

“A lot of them I helped get elected, so I probably should have elected someone else,” McCarthy told National Review after the betrayal.

The McCarthy Majority Committee made large contributions to the 2022 campaigns of Matt Rosendale of Montana, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, according to campaign finance records.

The PAC also gave $5,000 each to Eli Crane of Arizona and Bob Good of Virginia.

Representatives Cory Mills of Florida, Victoria Spartz of Indiana and Warren Davidson of Ohio — who originally supported ousting McCarthy but ultimately voted to keep him as speaker — also each received $10,000 from the Majority Committee.

The PAC also contributed $15,000 to the Spartz-affiliated Free Market Fund PAC and $10,000 to the Mace-affiliated Must Act to Create Excellence PAC.

Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) has been appointed as interim speaker until a new speaker can be chosen.

The hall has never removed and replaced speakers before in its 234-year history.

Multiple representatives have been floated as potential speakers, but it is unclear who will replace McCarthy at this time.

Nancy Pelosi has been ousted from her office on Capitol Hill by the speaker pro tempore.

McCarthy blasted Gaetz in an interview with reporters, blasting the Florida congressman as a fake conservative and calling his actions “personal.”

Mace’s and Crane’s 2022 campaigns also saw contributions of $5,000 and $10,000, respectively, from the Congressional Leadership Fund, another McCarthy-affiliated PAC, in 2022.

Crane was given an additional $900,000 in donations from the group to spend on ads, according to a January Politico report.

McCarthy raised a total of $65.2 million for House Republicans this election cycle, in July, according to the National Review.

Arizona’s Andy Biggs and Colorado’s Ken Buck — as well as incumbent Matt Gaetz of Florida — are the only GOP takers for McCarthy who have not received contributions from the former Speaker’s PAC.
