He enrolled in Miami’s football program and suffered a severe head injury during his first practice, which required surgery. As a result, he obtained a PhD in civil engineering and is currently a professor at the National Technical University of Athens.

George’s mother, Amy Weida Karlaftis, was a successful athlete in her field.
