Marcus McClung’s parents met at Virginia Tech, where his father was a football player and his mother was a cheerleader. Mac inherited his athletic abilities from his parents, and as he got older, he followed in his father’s footsteps and started playing football. However, when he was in seventh grade, his mother signed him up for a local youth and basketball league. Over time, Mac developed an interest in basketball and began practicing every day in hopes of joining the National Basketball Association. He ended up playing college basketball for the Georgetown Hoyas and Texas Tech Red Raiders.
McClung is rated as a three-star prospect and one of Virginia’s best high school athletes. Following the 2021 NBA draft, McClung went undrafted but ended up signing contracts with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. He then played for the South Bay Lakers in the G League, where he was voted Rookie of the Year for the 2021-22 season. Last year, McClung made history by becoming the first G-League player to win the Slam Dunk Contest.

Mac McClung was born on January 6, 1999, in Gate City, Virginia, and was raised by his parents, Marcus and Lenoir McClung. Marcus and Lenoir were athletes at Virginia Tech. Mac’s father, Marcus, excelled in football, playing tight end and goalie in the early 1990s. Likewise, Lenoir was a cheerleader at the same institution. They met in college and eventually married. Marcus continued to practice law, eventually becoming the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Scott County, Virginia, while Lenoir taught driver’s instruction at Gate City High.
Their sporting backgrounds had a significant impact on Mac’s upbringing. According to Marcus, Mac has had a competitive attitude since childhood, always ready to turn the most basic activity into a battle. Mac was first attracted to football and got instruction from his father. However, as he grew older, his interest shifted to basketball. Marcus was happy when Mac chose to focus on basketball, especially since he had quit football after his freshman year of high school.
Mac McClung’s Sister Anna Is A Former Football Player
Anna McClung, Mac McClung’s sister, was born on November 9, 1994. She is five years older than him. Anna, like her father, started playing soccer at an early age and eventually became one of the country’s top recruits. In 2013, Top Drawer Soccer listed him as the No. 1 overall recruit. 3 and striker No. 1.
Anna graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc.) in Public Relations. During her senior year, she was an active member of the Women’s Soccer Team and earned a spot on the SEC Honor Roll. Anna played for the Florida State University Women’s Soccer Team before coming to Tennessee. Anna currently works as an Account Executive at Assured Partners and has a wonderful married life with her partner.
