Rocky’s grandfather, Bob Lombardi, was a famous football coach. People refer to him as having built a football legacy in his bloodline. Bob died on May 28, 2021, after being born on June 3, 1938. From 1976 to 1978, he was the head football coach at the University of Chicago. He met his wife, Melinda, at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where she was a football coach and the daughter of the athletic director.
This may have helped his rapid progress in the world of football. He began his coaching career as an assistant football coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 1961. Bob also taught economics and math at the school. In 1967, he was promoted to head football coach at Homewood-Flossmoor. Lombardi succeeded his father-in-law as head football coach at the University of Chicago in 1976. He was also named an associate professor in the institution’s Department of Physical Education.
