The Chargers fired Coach Brandon Staley and GM Tom Telesco
The Los Angeles Chargers announced major changes to their leadership structure on December 15, 2023, after a string of dismal performances. The decision came after one of the most embarrassing defeats in the team’s history. Despite clinching a playoff appearance the previous season, the Chargers struggled this year, finishing 5-9. Their recent slide includes defeats in five of their last six games. Their dismal 63-21 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders not only set a team record for points given up, but also put them at the bottom of the AFC West standings.
Furthermore, the 42-point deficit in the game was the third largest in club history. As a result, the organization cut ties with head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco. Giff Smith will serve as interim head coach to fill the vacancy, while JoJo Wooden will take over as interim general manager. Tom Telesco has worked with the Chargers since 2013, while the team was located in San Diego.
Telesco’s stewardship throughout the years resulted in incredible success, including the draft of incredible players like Keenan Allen, Joey Bosa, and Justin Herbert. Under his leadership, the Chargers made the playoffs in 2013, 2018 and 2022. Dean Spanos, team owner and chairman of the board, thanked Staley and Telesco.
