In an interview with Page Six, the singer shared her thoughts on her son’s death. Named Beckett, Etheridge’s son died in May 2020 at the age of 21, after his addiction to opioids worsened and caused him to overdose at the time.
“We all get to choose every day, whether it’s love or fear, and my son made his choice, and I’m doing my best as a mother, and I’m not going to take any guilt or shame,” she told the publication. at the off-Broadway premiere of his show, “My Window – A Journey Through Life.”
The singer also said that his son “doesn’t want to [her] to stop and spoil [her] living because of his choice.” In addition to following his will, Etheridge also shared that “having a deep spiritual belief that we all make our own choices” was key to his decision to live on and continue his career after Beckett’s death.

At the time of Beckett’s death, Etheridge took it Twitter to announce tragic information to his fans and sympathize with parents who lost their children to drug addiction.
“Today I join the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction,” he tweeted. “My son Beckett, who just turned 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally gave in today.”
He added: “He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends. My heart is broken. I thank those who have sent their condolences, and I feel their love and sincere sorrow. We are struggling with what more we can do. to save him, and in the end, we know he’s out of pain now.”

According to the publication, the deceased man often shared videos on his page, showing himself taking a narcotic called “lean.” Also known as the “purple drink”, the mind-numbing drug is a mix of codeine cough syrup and Sprite.
More prominent is Beckett’s use of opioids such as Xanax and Percocet, as reported by several sources. Beckett was also allegedly involved in crack cocaine and often called his neighbors late at night, asking for baking soda to turn the cocaine into smokeable crack.

After her son’s death, Etheridge did indeed move on, as evidenced by her decision to return to singing. His latest project, “My Window – A Journey Through Life,” was previewed on October 13th and he will be performing on several dates until it closes on October 29th.
Per Broadwaythe show’s narrative focuses on “the story of his childhood in Kansas to the highlights of his breakthrough career—with all the life hits and deep cuts in between.”
Aside from her Broadway work, Etheridge has won two Grammy awards out of a whopping 15 nominations in the music industry. In addition, he also boasts the 2007 Oscar for Best Original Song for “I Need to Wake Up.” The music was used in the 2006 concert/documentary film “An Inconvenient Truth.”
Known for her unique lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, the singer has released several hits, including “Ain’t It Heavy,” since she released her eponymous debut album in 1998.
