Memorial proposed for Grenfell Tower fire where 72 died

The site of London’s Grenfell Tower, where 72 people died in the fire, may be a memorial to the victims.

The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission has distributed leaflets to nearby residents, suggesting a new memorial, complete with a garden, be built on the building’s site, according to The Guardian.

The current 24-storey structure was badly damaged by the 2017 fire and is protected by protective cladding. The most significant damage was above the 10th floor, government officials warned.

The commission said in a report that it would conduct its own independent assessment of the damage to “understand what might have happened,” which included potentially using structural parts of the memorial.

“Whether or not it is viable to use the structure or part of Grenfell Tower as part of the memorial, the commission recommends that height and visibility should be considered in the future design for the memorial,” according to The Guardian, which saw the 50-page report.

“We encourage creative approaches on how this can be achieved including the possibility of using light or other means to create the appearance of height,”

In addition, the commission has proposed a park for people to “remember and reflect, individually and publicly, on who and what we have lost.”

Space will be limited in terms of what can happen within it. The memorial aims to “rekindle community, love, hope, grief and those who have been taken from us,” the pamphlet reportedly said, and be a place of shared mourning.

A design mockup is expected to be made in the spring, and the commission said it must “reflect the rich mix of faiths and cultural backgrounds that make up the Grenfell community.”

If the memorial is approved, construction will most likely begin in 2026, reports The Guardian, and it will be looked after by the royal park.

The tower caught fire in 2017.

The youngest victim was a premature baby who died at birth to a mother who was hospitalized due to smoke inhalation.

More than 200 people survived the fire.
