The site of London’s Grenfell Tower, where 72 people died in the fire, may be a memorial to the victims.
The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission has distributed leaflets to nearby residents, suggesting a new memorial, complete with a garden, be built on the building’s site, according to The Guardian.
The current 24-storey structure was badly damaged by the 2017 fire and is protected by protective cladding. The most significant damage was above the 10th floor, government officials warned.
The commission said in a report that it would conduct its own independent assessment of the damage to “understand what might have happened,” which included potentially using structural parts of the memorial.
“Whether or not it is viable to use the structure or part of Grenfell Tower as part of the memorial, the commission recommends that height and visibility should be considered in the future design for the memorial,” according to The Guardian, which saw the 50-page report.

In addition, the commission has proposed a park for people to “remember and reflect, individually and publicly, on who and what we have lost.”
