Miami mom accused of locking up 9-year-old for years in bedroom as little girl had to ‘beg to eat’

A Miami mother has been arrested for allegedly keeping her 9-year-old daughter trapped indoors for years, forcing the little girl to beg for food and neglecting her basic needs, police said.

Kelli McGriff-Williams, 42, stood before a judge Thursday facing allegations that she confined her daughter between 2017 and 2023, confining her “much of the time to a bedroom,” according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

“The victim had to beg for food, and the defendant would not always give the victim food,” police wrote in the arrest report.

The child was also deprived of any medical visits “even when he was very sick,” officials said. In addition, the little girl could not read or write, and never received a proper education, ABC News reported.

McGriff-Williams was admitted to Jackson South Hospital involuntarily on Aug. 26 because of his “altered mental state,” police said.

Authorities arrested the mother following an investigation by the Florida Department of Children and Families into the alleged abuse.

The child was taken into police custody and confirmed the allegations detailed in the state investigation, authorities said. The University of Miami’s Child Protection Team concluded that the child suffered examples of “child neglect, medical neglect, mental injury and educational neglect.”

The victim’s father, who has not been publicly identified, also confirmed the allegations and said he had been trying to get legal custody of his daughter for the past five years.

Following interviews with the child and his father, McGriff-Williams was released from the hospital and booked on September 3.
