Michael Che Reveals ‘Saturday Night Live’ Will Not Be ‘Live’ Amid The Ongoing Writers Strike

Michael Che has revealed an upcoming episode of “Saturday Night Live” will not air this weekend amid the ongoing WGA writers’ strike.

The Writers Guild of America began an attack earlier this week. The strike reportedly began as a result of the failure of the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to come to an agreement regarding ongoing “high-stakes negotiations.”

According to the union, “The company’s behavior has created a gig economy in the union workforce, and their unyielding stance in these negotiations has betrayed a commitment to further debase the writing profession.” (per NBC)

The Alliance of Film and Television Producers also released their own statement; the institution was created for bargaining purposes “on behalf of the studio,” the outlet also reported.

The alliance reiterated in their statement that they are in fact offering “a generous increase in compensation for writers.”

Several television shows have already ceased production, including “Saturday Night Live.” Longtime cast member and “Weekend Update” staple Michael Che, wrote one of his trademark text notes on Instagram Thursday, announcing the cancellation.

The Blast has shared ongoing coverage of the writers’ strike; the last high-profile WGA writers’ strike was in 2007.

Among the TV shows that have stopped filming new material are Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” ABC’s blockbuster “Abbott Elementary,” and Amazon Prime’s “Good Omens,” according to one of our writers’ strike coverage.

Some live action shows have also halted production in solidarity. These include “The Late Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Tonight Show” and “Late Night” from NBC following it. HBO’s “Real Time With Bill Maher” and “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” will also not be produced. Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” also postponed filming.

The Writers’ Strike inspired a lot of conversation on Twitter.

Writer and comedian Ashley Ray tweeted, “kids don’t remember how bad tv was during the 2007 writers strike.”

“Abbott Elementary” writer Brittani Nichols retweeted an article from Deadline with the headline revealing the second season finale has increased greatly in “viewing delay”; the episode has garnered a larger audience through streaming than its live broadcast.

Nicholas tweeted“Fortunately I, as the writer of this episode, did not benefit from this success because of the current residual model of streaming.”

Quinta Brunson too tweeted his support for the strike and also revealed his plans to join the picket line.

The creator of Abbott Elementary cited a tweet asking about his involvement with the writers and why he hasn’t ‘helped’ them so far.

“I don’t use this app anymore because honestly it’s a bit much for me- but I just want to clarify- I’m a writer. I’m in wga. I’m on strike too! I have no real power here other than to join my union in demanding fair compensation for writers!” Brunson also uses the hashtag #wgastrong.

he continued, “I’m on my way home now but this week you’ll probably find me on the picket line. This strike is not about me either, and I don’t want to talk about me either. It’s all about the writer. ? please support. There’s no show or movie you’d love to write without a… writer.”

Michael Che Reveals ‘Saturday Night Live’ Will Not Be Live This Weekend

In one of two posts on his grid, Che announced the cast of ‘SNL’ will not be filming live this weekend because they are on strike.

He wrote, “no snl night live this week because we’re on skrike. i have free time and no money. still owe shane 10 grand. ranger is out. split knocks. sore knees. every day is a nightmare.”

Che added “check your weak friends**” as the caption of the post.

“Che what picket sign are you talking about” a fan asked.

“Why aren’t you on the picket line?” another asked.

“You still have a nest che nest though [thankful emoji],” one fan wrote.

“You can always do that stand-up thing you do sometimes,” another suggested.

“This is the part where Colin makes a bad joke about vacation,” one fan joked.

It was unclear whether “Saturday Night Live” would be off the air for more than a week, as of this writing.
