Michael Jackson’s Famed ‘Pepsi Generation’ Jacket Set To Fetch A Fortune In Auction

Michael Jackson loved rocking these statement pieces for his impressive performances, and now they’re making a posthumous fortune.

Another item from the king of pop’s wardrobe is set to be auctioned at a ridiculous price for its sentimental value. Jackson worked with many designers throughout his life and created unique pieces for his ultimate show. She remains a source of inspiration in fashion to this day.

Michael Jackson’s 1984 Pepsi Generation Ad Jacket Is The Rave Of The Moment

While Jackson’s latest work isn’t as popular as other auction items, it still has an interesting history. The black and white leather jacket was worn by the “Heal the World” star on the set of a “Pepsi Generation” commercial in 1984.

The icon dances in the street with a group of kids wearing the now famous leather jackets in the ad. The ad is iconic because it was a first for a pop star, and the coat was custom-made, too.

However, the jacket’s existence was unknown until a man, Wendell Thompson, who received it as a gift from the star, brought it forward. According to Thompson, her father was Jackson’s cosmetologist, and Jackson handed over the jacket in 1983 before the ad aired during a meeting with the star in Orlando.

Wendell revealed he was at the grand opening of the Jackson suite at Disney World’s Hotel Royal Plaza. He continued that he had kept the jacket for years and was finally ready to give it away and make a small fortune.

Thompson plans to use the proceeds from the auction to set up his children and family in his will in hopes of a better future for them. TMZ shared that the auction starts November 10th via Propstore and is estimated between $230-$460k with a possibility that it leans towards the latter.

Just last month, another item of his was auctioned. The 1983 Moonwalk hat caused a frenzy among buyers and auction houses. Hotel Drouot is hosting an auction in Paris, and the famous black fedora is expected to fetch around $60-100k.

According to The Blast, the hat was previously owned by Adam Kelly, who grabbed it during a Motown concert where the “Thriller” star tossed it into the crowd as he debuted his iconic moonwalk.

Artpeges gallery organizer Arthur Perault revealed that Kelly held on to it in the hope that Jackson’s team would contact him to get it back, but that never happened. Years later, the hat found its way to several private collectors, with Paris as its final destination before it returned to a new owner.

However, Perault shared that demand for the pop star’s merchandise has dropped drastically following fake reports and heavy allegations against the late artist.

Pop Icon’s Estate Solves Stolen Pajama Case

MJ’s estate scored a victory against pajama thieves earlier this month. The theft reportedly took place after Jackson’s death in 2019, and the perpetrator made off with his intimate items.

Medical officers reportedly removed Pajama while trying to revive the pop star as she wore it hours before her tragic death. Legal documents reveal that a lawsuit filed by Jackson’s estate to get his items back ended in a settlement.

Per The Blast, the perpetrator, Jeffre Philips, and the plaintiff announced the settlement but remained tight-lipped about the content of their agreement. However, it was not confirmed whether Philips returned the items to the Judge as requested by the Jackson estate or paid the aggregate value estimated at around $1 million.

News of the Philips theft broke in 2022 after Jackson’s estate revealed that a man engaged to one of the “You’re Not Alone” singer’s siblings made off with her belongings.

In the lawsuit, Philips mismanaged her fiancee’s status during her nine-day stay at Carolwood Jackson. The suit alleges that Phillips was present at Jackson’s death and took the time to flee his personal belongings, including Jackson’s iPhone and his children.

Other items Philips obtained illegally included a Jackson California driver’s license, resuscitation tubes, prescription bottles with pills and clothing. The theft, which Jackson’s estate described as a “horrible and inhumane act,” was discovered in 2021 following an original call by a buyer at Phillips’ auction.
