Amanda Sauer and Michelle Cook met each other in her hometown of Pittsburgh before Amanda joined the college circuit. Daughter Amanda attends The Ellis School where Michelle teaches as head coach. Over the years, they bonded and became friends over their love for soccer.
Amanda revealed that Michelle gave her insight from the player’s perspective when they talked about officiating the game. In June 2018, Michelle and Amanda tied the knot and got married. Amanda said of his wife, “She brings a great perspective as a player when we discuss fouls or other issues that may arise on the field.”
Amanda’s three daughters attended their mother’s wedding. She shared that, “The girls have an incredible love for her and for us together. She made me the strong, independent and high-spirited woman that I am on and off the soccer field.”
Amanda says the two stick together and take care of each other honestly — especially when it comes to football. As for Michelle, she is allegedly married to her unknown ex-husband. He has two children; a son and a daughter from his previous relationship.
Speaking of Amanda, she is the first openly bisexual pro-soccer referee. Sauer began officiating in 2011. When a fellow spectator overheard him yelling about a missed illegal block call while he was watching a high school football game with his daughter, the person recommended Sauer-Cook start attending meetings to become a high school referee in Westchester County, NY which he did.
When Amanda started officiating, she hadn’t started working as a referee. He also made history working in major league football when he served as the center referee for the short-lived Alliance of American Football.
Who Is Amanda Sauer’s Husband?
Amanda Sauer was previously married to her husband Peter Sauer. Peter was a former team captain at Stanford who helped lead the Cardinals to the 1998 Final Four. Sadly, Peter passed away at the age of 35 in July 2012. He died in White Plains, NY, while playing in an adult league recreational basketball game.
Peter, who married Amanda in 2001, died shortly after celebrating their 11th anniversary. Together, they have three daughters. In 2014, their eldest daughter was diagnosed with melanoma. She was by her daughter’s side for a full month of chemotherapy every day, followed three times a week, while her daughter only missed school for surgery.
Speaking of Amanda’s late husband, Peter was born on November 9, 1976 in St. Louis, Missouri. He earned a degree in economics from Stanford. His father Mark Sauer is the former president of the St. Louis Blues of the NHL and the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club.
