Michigan toddler lost in the woods found asleep using family dog as pillow

A 2-year-old Michigan girl wandered away from her home with her family’s two dogs — and was found hours later sleeping peacefully in the woods, using one of the dogs as a pillow.

State troopers from the Iron Mountain post in the Upper Peninsula were called to a home in the Faithorn area of Menominee County about 8 p.m. Wednesday after the girl, identified as Thea Chase, took off.

Police launched a search using drones and K-9s as citizens from both Michigan and neighboring Wisconsin helped in the remote wooded area.

Around midnight, someone on an ATV found Thea about 3 miles away.

“He laid down and used one of the dogs as a pillow, and the other dog laid right next to him and kept him safe,” state police Lt. Mark Giannunzio said Thursday. “It’s a very remarkable story.”

Thea’s mother, Brooke Chase, told WJMN-TV that the family frantically searched for the missing girl before calling authorities.

“I realized he was missing and I told his uncle, and I said, ‘Where is he?'” Chase told the outlet. “We searched around the yard, up and down the road, shouting his name at the top of our lungs, calling the dog because the dog was also missing.

“It’s really wooded. The forest is deep and thick around here. There was a swamp there, so of course we were, like, scared. And after about 15 minutes of searching for him with our friends and family, I called the police,” he said.

“I was in such a fog and shock that he was completely gone, overnight,” Chase added.

Thea was examined by medical staff after her dog’s adventure and appeared to be in good health, according to Giannunzio.

Faithorn is an unincorporated village located east of the Wisconsin state line and about 60 miles southwest of Marquette, Michigan.
