Migrant mom and her 2 children drown while trying to cross Rio Grande into Texas: ‘Tragedy’

An immigrant woman and her two children drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande into Texas.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) announced the tragic incident Friday in a press release and also complained that state officials denied federal agents access to the park near the river when they arrived to find the family, according to Border Reports.

“This is a tragedy, and the state bears responsibility,” Cuellar said.

“The Border Patrol is unable to provide aid to migrants and try to rescue them.”

Cuellar said the woman and child were trapped in a river current by Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas, adding that US Border Patrol agents were unable to help them because Texas Department of Public Safety troopers blocked access to the park earlier this week.

He said that at around 9pm on Friday, Border Patrol agents found out that six migrants were in trouble in the river.

He said they tried to contact the Texas Department of the Army, the Texas National Guard, and other state authorities by phone, but were unsuccessful.

Agents eventually met with members of the Texas Military Department and the Texas National Guard at the entrance to Shelby Park and told them border crossers were in trouble, according to Cuellar.

He said Texas Department of Defense troopers will not give agents access to immigrants – even in an emergency – and they will send a trooper to investigate.

However, on Saturday, the three bodies of the migrants were found by Mexican authorities, the congressman said.

The state Department of Justice on Friday asked the US Supreme Court to order Texas to stop blocking access to the 50-acre park, according to Border Reports.

When asked about the incident, a spokesman for Governor Greg Abbott said, “Texas is holding the line on our southern border with miles of additional razor wire and anti-climb barriers to deter and repel the highest levels of illegal immigration invited by President Biden’s reckless open border policy .”
