The actor is a lot different than living on the streets or starving now but that wasn’t the case when he was young. His now deceased mother and he had an abusive relationship and suffered extreme poverty together.

“I spent a lot of my youth wishing my mother was something she wasn’t, wishing she was like other mothers,” Kelly wrote in the book and repeated to Many people magazine in an interview this week. “I can only appreciate how special he is as I get older. Even when it’s probably a little too late.”

She described her childhood as “traumatic” and scarred as she watched her mother do whatever she could to provide for her as a single mother. His mother Maureen struggled with drug addiction and domestic abuse.

‘Mo’ died in 2008 after battling colon cancer. As Kelly watches cancer take her mother, she slowly begins to soften towards her and develop a closer relationship.

Kelly reveals that the book is very candid, and she doesn’t hold back on detailing some of the bigger moments in her life such as her mother’s death. She initially learns about her mother’s cancer and goes to see her about her upsetting upbringing with encouragement from her therapist.

Prior to that, Kelly hadn’t spoken to her mother in a while her plan backfired when she saw her mother and the confrontation didn’t turn out that way. “I watched him start to crumble in shame and remorse and pain when he’d already been through so much, and I kept thinking, ‘I shouldn’t have done this to him.’

He immediately moved to a place that likes to move. “I just have to forgive him and love him. He’s broken. What’s the point of pouring salt on the wound? I’m good. I just want to take care of him now.”

With her mother too ill to return, she invites her estranged daughter to Thanksgiving but Kelly chooses to decline, a decision she still thinks about to this day. “That was his favorite holiday, and he really wanted me to be there,” he remembers choosing to work.

“I was just like, ‘Ah, I’ll see you for the next one,’ knowing deep down there’s never going to be another one. And I think about that a lot. It still breaks my heart.” She admits that during her rough childhood, it instilled resilience in her.

There are fun moments like, “If she makes a lot of money that night, we’ll go grocery shopping at 2 in the morning” Kelly often works with her mother at the Crazy Girls club. “My childhood was colorful and chaotic, unstable and inconsistent, unpredictable and difficult at times. But the upside is that it made me a very adaptable person.”
