Minnesota woman sues dentist who allegedly left her disfigured and distressed after just one visit

A Minnesota woman is suing her dentist, claiming he left her disabled and in distress after he performed too many procedures in just one visit and falsified how much anesthesia he gave her.

Kathleen Wilson alleges in her civil suit filed Thursday in Hennepin County Court that Dr. Kevin Molldrem performed eight dental crowns, four root canals and 20 fillings in five and a half hours in July 2020.

As a result, Wilson was left in pain, embarrassed, disfigured and depressed and had to have several other appointments with other dentists to correct the mess Molldrem alleged, according to an affidavit obtained by the Star Tribune.

He went on to claim that Molldrem used too much anesthetic and falsified his medical records to avoid liability.

His suit – which seeks at least $50,000 in damages – has the support of a Florida dentist.

Dr. Avrum Goldstein admitted that Mollgrem was correct in his diagnosis on July 7, 2020 that “almost every tooth” in Wilson’s mouth was damaged, but that his treatment the following week was poor.

“Katie requires a slow, thoughtful, careful and measured response to her illness,” Goldstein wrote in the Nov. 14 report.

“Trying to fill every hole in every tooth in his mouth in one visit is not only contrary to what is shown, it is humanly impossible to achieve in an effective or constructive way.”

He said that Molldrem’s attempt to restore all of Wilson’s teeth in one visit did nothing to address his susceptibility to disease or his potential tooth loss.

Goldstein also argued that Molldrem — who has practiced in Eden Prairie since 2004 — gave Wilson too much anesthesia during her surgery.

The maximum recommended dose for a long appointment is 490 milligrams, but Molldrem allegedly nearly doubled that when he saw Wilson in July 2020 — giving her 960 milligrams.

Wilson eventually received proper treatment for the repair and replacement of his many restorations in an “attempt to stabilize his mouth” from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry for several months in 2022, the lawsuit states.

But if all of Wilson’s teeth end up having to be extracted or replaced with implants, Goldstein said “all the work that was done and all the expenses associated with it would be for naught.”
