The rescue of an elderly Idaho woman is being hailed as a “miracle” after she was found alive in her car four days after it plunged into a ravine.
Penny Kay Clark, 72, of Nampa, was reported missing by her family on Dec. 5 when she failed to return from running errands, the Idaho Statesman reported.
Four days later, on Friday, two men found Clark’s silver 2021 Chevy Equinox down about 200 yards down a canyon near Melba, the Canyon County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) said in a statement.
Authorities found Clark about 40 feet from the crash site, the agency said.
“CCSO began working with Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue in a plan to rescue him. Various other agencies – Life Flight Network, Nampa Police Department, Upper Deer Flat Fire, Melba Fire, Canyon County Paramedics, and Idaho Fish & Game – were also dispatched to the scene to assist,” the official statement said.
Two men spotted Clark’s car and reported it to authorities.
It took two hours for rescue crews to get Clark to a first responder command post, where he received initial medical treatment before being taken to a hospital.
“This is one of the most miraculous incidents I can remember in all my years in law enforcement, and it is a true testament to Penny Clark’s strength and perseverance,” said Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue.
“The paramedics who assessed him at the scene believe he had been there for at least a few days and most likely since Tuesday when his family last contacted him. It was truly a miracle, and I hope he makes a full recovery,” he added.
It took two hours for search crews to move Clark to the first responder area.
Clark’s family has asked for privacy as he continues his recovery, authorities said.
