Missile fire from Lebanon wounds a utility work crew in northern Israel as the front heats up

JERUSALEM: Lebanese Hezbollah militants fired anti-tank missiles at an Israeli community across the border on Sunday, Israeli officials said, seriously injuring utility workers as a wave of attacks from Lebanon threatened to escalate to another front in the Middle East’s latest war.

The Israeli military said it attacked the origin of the launch with artillery fire.

Israel Electric Corp said workers in the rural community of Dovev were injured while repairing lines damaged in an earlier attack.

Israeli media reported six people were injured, including one critically.

Hezbollah said it launched a guided missile against “logistics forces belonging to the occupation forces who were to install transmission masts and wiretapping and espionage devices near the Dovev barracks.”

It said it hit an Israeli army bulldozer in a separate attack.

Shortly after the attack, air raid sirens were heard in northern Israel. Army Radio reported that another anti-tank missile had been fired from Lebanon.

The attack was the most serious incident involving civilians since Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on November 5 killed a woman and three children.

Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants and their allies have been fighting along the border since the Israel-Hamas war began five weeks ago with a bloody incursion into southern Israel by Hezbollah’s ally Hamas.

Although largely contained, the fighting has increased in intensity as Israel launches a ground offensive in Gaza against Hamas.

Earlier on Sunday, the army reported that it struck a militant cell in Lebanon that was aiming to open fire on Israeli territory.

Overnight, Israel said a military drone attacked a militant cell attempting to launch an anti-tank missile in northern Israel, near the town of Metula.

Also Sunday, the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, said one of its peacekeepers had been wounded in overnight gunfire near the Lebanese town of al-Qawza. It was not clear where the shots came from or whether peacekeepers were targeted or caught in the crossfire. UNIFIL said it was investigating.
