Missouri Democratic Rep. Sarah Unsicker (D-83) was removed from her committee assignment after she posted a photo on social media with an influencer the Anti-Defamation League called a Holocaust denier and “alt-right troll.”
However, the four-term representative, who is running for Missouri Attorney General in 2024, claimed on his Substack that he was not aware of any formal inquiries or complaints made against him until House Speaker Dean Plocher (R-89) told him Friday afternoon that his office had received a letter announcing his dismissal from his committee position.
Missouri House Minority Leader Crystal Quade, a fellow Democrat, issued a news release Friday announcing Unsicker’s removal.
“Throughout her time in the legislature, Rep. Sarah Unsicker has proven to be a strong advocate for the vulnerable, especially children,” Quade wrote.
“Recently, however, he has chosen to use social media to promote individuals who support baseless conspiracies and racist and antisemitic ideologies that are contrary to the values of inclusion, tolerance and respect that House Democrats are dedicated to upholding,” he continued.

“As a result, I am removing Rep. Unsicker from all committees as the process of evaluating his future as a member of the House Democratic Caucus begins.”
Although X posts containing offensive images are no longer visible, in a separate postUnsicker identified the man he once met as Charles C. Johnson, to whom the ADL dedicates an entire page on its website.
Today is not the first time a government official “under investigation” to meet @JohnsonThought1. However, I never received any official inquiries. I would appreciate an official list of allegations. https://t.co/QAHmQqW09e

In their writing, the organization claimed Johnson “understated the number of Jews killed [in the Holocaust] is fake” in a 2017 “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit.
The ADL also pointed out Johnson founded a crowdfunding website that “reportedly raised more than $150,000 in 2017 for the legal defense of neo-Nazi Andrew Anglin.”

The blurb also notes that Johnson was invited to Capitol Hill in October 2017 and February 2018 by former Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), respectively.
In a statement Thursday, Unsicker expressed confusion about his removal and how it happened.
“I am confused by the statement that I have ‘promoted individuals’ who support ‘baseless conspiracy theories.’ I was not given any explanation as to how my behavior differed from my normal behavior, including my refusal to respond to defamatory representations about others,” he wrote.
On Substack, Unsicker wrote that “despite the fact that I have not been officially removed from the committee,” references to him as a member of the House Subcommittee on Appropriations, Health, Mental Health and Senior Services have been removed from his official House website.
He also said he was removed from the Children and Families Committee.
An email sent to Unsicker seeking comment was not immediately returned.
