Missouri mother burns baby to death inside oven after claiming she mistook it for a crib: officials

A Missouri mother burned her one-month-old baby to death in an oven — and then claimed to police that she mistook the pot for a crib, officials said.

Police described the scene at a Kansas City home as “horrific,” after mother Mariah Thomas’ toddler was found badly burned and not breathing on Friday, according to The Guardian.

Thomas told authorities she “was putting her son down for a nap, and accidentally put the child in the oven instead of the crib,” according to Fox 4.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said “our hearts are heavy with the loss of this precious life.”

“We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to this horrific situation,” he said, according to local outlets.

Thomas is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and child death.

Last month, a toddler was found dead in the home of a disgraced police lieutenant and adoptive father who was jailed for raping children.

The mother called 911 after the child had a medical emergency inside a Boston-area home.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The child was found at the home of former Winthrop Police Lt. James Feeley, who was arrested in December.
