Model who conned mom out of $150M in psychic scam dies in mystery plunge

The mother of all scams?

A model accused of defrauding her own mother of nearly $150 million through an elaborate psychic scheme has died following a mysterious plunge from a building in Brazil. He is 49 years old.

Sabine Boghici plunged from the fifth floor of a building in Rio De Janeiro on September 14, Jam Press reported. Police investigating his death are reportedly considering several hypotheses, including suicide.

He is said to have left a letter for his wife, Rosa Stanesco Nicolau, before his death.

Boghici was buried Sunday in a funeral attended by his mother, Geneviève, 83, and his sister, Muriel, Globo 1 reported.

Nicolau was absent, as he was being held in prison for his alleged role in defrauding his mother-in-law.

Sabine, a self-proclaimed singer and actress, was arrested in August 2022.

His mother had inherited a fortune from his father, Jean Boghici, a Romanian-born collector who owned one of Brazil’s most important art collections of the 20th century. He died in 2015 at the age of 87.

In a skit straight out of “The Sting,” someone poses as a psychic and tells the superstitious widow that Sabine is dying, according to Correio Braziliense.

A fake fortune teller and an Afro-Brazilian priestess were enlisted to confirm the fake predictions.

Worried, the rich widow goes to Sabine, who allegedly feigns fear and begs her mother to foot the bill for the “spiritual work” needed to ward off this dire premonition.

The octogenarian eventually gave up and began making regular payments in an effort to save his daughter’s life.

In February 2020, Geneviève began to realize she was being scammed and stopped transferring money.

In response, Sabine allegedly took her mother’s cellphone, stopped feeding her, and threatened her with a knife, according to Correio Braziliense

Sabine is also accused of firing her mother’s maid so she can sneak out of the house unmolested.

According to police chief Gilberto Ribeiro, who led the investigation, Sabine and his wife claimed “the painting has an evil eye, something negative that needs to be prayed for.”

“They continued to take it, and the old woman saw it but could not refuse; he was completely subdued at that time,” he said.

The haul is reportedly worth $149 million, including $1.2 million in jewels, more than $1.8 million in payments for divine diagnoses (including those taken under threat), and more than $145 million in artwork, including a museum-grade opus from Brazilian trailblazers Tarsila do Amaral and Emiliano Di Cavalcanti.

Police video, taken during the raid, shows authorities finding several works under the bed, including Amaral’s “Sol Poente” (1929).

“Wow! Look who’s here!” shouted a female officer as she removed the bubble wrap of the painting.

Charges include embezzlement, extortion, false imprisonment and criminal association.

Sabine was jailed with Nicolau before being released on bail in March.

Both are due to attend a court hearing on September 21.

In relation to Sabine’s death, her lawyer, Hugo Novais, stated that the case against her had been closed, but was ongoing for her accomplices.
