Models found dead in luxury LA homes just days apart as anguished families seek answers

Two models have been found dead in their luxury apartments in downtown Los Angeles just two days apart and less than a mile from each other — and one of the late women’s families fears a killer is on the loose.

Nichole “Nikki” Coats, 32, was found in her apartment on Grand Avenue after police responded to a call from relatives who could not reach her on September 10, the LA Times reported.

Coats’ death is not being investigated as a homicide, citing police and the LA County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Department.

But his family told KTLA that his bed was found covered in blood.

“This is ridiculous and I want some answers because my daughter is gone,” Sharon Coats, Nikki’s mother, told the outlet. “And it’s not fair. I want everyone to know who did this to her. He shouldn’t have gone.”

Two days later, Maleesa Mooney, 31, was found dead in her Bunker Hill apartment on South Figueroa Street on September 12, Fox LA reported.

His death is being investigated as a homicide, police said.

It is unclear whether the two deaths are linked.

Mooney, a real estate agent, stopped returning text messages and calls from her worried family.

“When a week went by, we just knew something was wrong,” her cousin Bailey Babb told KTLA. “The message wasn’t sent and we knew something was up because we all have a special relationship with Maleesa.”

Her sister Jourdin Pauline described the tragic model as a kind and loving person and said she did not know who wanted to kill her.

“Maleesa has always been a peacemaker in our family, someone who has always been the backbone, and kept everyone together, loving each other,” Pauline told the outlet.

“So this is a big part of us that is gone now,” he added.

Mooney’s cause of death remains undetermined pending an autopsy, according to the LAPD, which is seeking the public’s help in identifying possible suspects.

Meanwhile, Coats’ devastated family has expressed frustration about the lack of information from investigators.

Coats was last heard from when he told friends he was leaving on September 8, according to the outlet.

When he didn’t answer calls and texts, his family went to his apartment on September 10 and found his body at the scene of the gruesome incident.

“I couldn’t recognize him,” his aunt May Stevens told KTLA. “I believe it’s murder, I really do. One of his legs is up in the air kicking. That’s not someone who just lay in their bed and died.”

Sharon said her daughter had no enemies but believed she had been murdered.

“I don’t know who she went out with or what happened there,” said the grieving mother. “I don’t know but I will find out. So if you are out there, you will be caught. You messed with the wrong people.”

Coats’ cousin, Sheniya Mason told ABC 7: “I’m so upset … I just feel like everything is moving in slow motion. And I’m still in shock … in denial that he’s not here.”

He said the death “just didn’t look right to us … It didn’t look right how he was on the bed. He wasn’t even recognizable … as if he had been beaten.

“They had to (identify) him by his tattoo,” Mason said.

He wondered if there was a connection between the two deaths.

“We just want to know what happened… It doesn’t seem right… Is there a connection between these two women? Is there a connection?” he told the station.

“They’re both almost in the same area … we have to make sure it’s not something else because it doesn’t look right,” Mason added.

The family also expressed their concern that the serial killer might attack other women.

“I think there’s a predator that got away,” Stevens told KTLA.

Coats has been mourned on a GoFundMe page.

“Nikki’s passionate personality is one that touches and influences everyone she crosses paths with. She is known as an amazing daughter, friend and soul. His untimely passing has left us shocked,” wrote organizer John Clark.

“There is no way we could have imagined or prepared for these difficult times,” he added.

The cases are still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 1-877-527-3247.
