Mom has leg bitten off by shark and bleeds to death after saving 5-year-old daughter

A young mother swimming off the coast of Mexico was killed while saving her 5-year-old daughter from a shark, which bit the woman’s leg, leaving her bleeding on the beach.

A heartbreaking video was shared on social media over the weekend, showing a victim of a shark attack lying on the sand in the town of Melaque Saturday after being brought from the Pacific Ocean to safety by rescuers.

Terrified onlookers can be heard shouting off camera: “he lost his leg.”

The woman has been identified locally as 26-year-old Maria Fernandez Martinez Jimenez, a former marine biology student at the University of Guadalajara, who lives in the area in the western state of Jalisco.

Jimenez was in the ocean with her daughter when she apparently noticed a shark in the water and rushed to lift the girl onto a floating play platform 75 feet from shore, said Rafael Araiza, head of the local public defense office.

The mother had just managed to save her 5-year-old son from danger when the apex predator attacked, clamping its jaws around his leg near the hip.

Despite a quick response by rescuers, Jimenez died from blood loss from massive wounds, Ariaza confirmed. Her daughter escaped unharmed.

It was not immediately known what species of shark was responsible for the fatal attack.

The horrific incident happened while a swimming race was taking place nearby, said Civil Protection officials in the municipality of Cihuatlan.

“Our officers were conducting support activities during a swimming event in the bay when they received a report of someone having trouble getting out of the sea,” the statement said. “When they reached the area they found a lifeless woman with one of her legs amputated, apparently following a shark attack.”

Authorities closed beaches in Melaque and the nearby town of Barra de Navidad to swimming as a precaution.

Shark attacks are relatively rare in Mexico. In 2019, a US diver survived a shark bite on the forearm in Magdalena Bay off the coast of Baja California Sur.
