A Georgia mother has been targeted in a $25,000 murder-for-hire scheme her respected doctor fiance set up on the dark web – and she’s still allowing their daughter to talk to her from jail.
Tonya discovers James Wan’s plan to harass her when she is hospitalized after breaking her ankle at a May 2022 party at their son’s school.
Nurses pulled the 37-year-old from Wan’s bedside to meet a team of FBI agents in the hospital chapel, where they showed evidence that Wan, 52, had denounced him, he told the Daily Mail.
“‘You’re a victim, I’ll tell you that,'” she recalled an agent telling her.
“‘We have a suspect in the matter, and the suspect is sitting in that room.’
“I just want you to digest that for a moment. We have an obligation to warn you that there is that place, that there is an exchange of money, and that’s why we’re here.’”
Agents showed Tonya, whose last name has been withheld, messages her drunken husband had written on the dark web, including a picture of him and his license plate number.
Wan wanted the killing to look like an “accident”.
Federal agents learned of the plot after a private citizen, who was not involved, saw a dark web forum and alerted the FBI.
“What surprised me the most was the fact that he never told them to make sure our daughter wasn’t in the car before doing it,” Tonya told the Daily Mail.
“Our daughter will be strapped into her car seat as she watches her mother bleed to death.”
The couple met at the Mississippi resort where Tonya worked, and she left the Magnolia State for Georgia to be with him in 2016.

“I feel ashamed that I have given up my whole life and moved here with him,” she told the British outlet.
Wan had sent $8,000 worth of bitcoins to the murder-for-hire market as a 50% down payment, according to authorities, but he accidentally transferred it to the wrong crypto wallet.
Two days later, he will send another $8,000 to the right person, who confirms receipt.
The hitman then asked Wan how he wanted the killing to be done and whether he would prefer it to look like an “accident or a normal shooting.”
“Accident is better,” Wan replied, according to the US Department of Justice. On April 29, 2022, he sent another $8,000 from the escrow account and asked “how soon [the] work done?”

“Is there any way I can find out any progress? If anyone is at my location?” he wrote.
A few weeks later, he will send another $1,200 to an escrow account.
This is not the first time Wan tried to hurt his fiancee, he claimed.
An angry Wan crashed their car in the Blue Ridge Mountains after he forced her to leave a North Carolina casino, he said.
Tonya managed to pull Wan out and onto the embankment before the vehicle exploded, she told the Daily Mail. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, but later dropped.

He stopped drinking for a year, but relapsed, sparking a series of ugly arguments in which he allegedly berated her for having less money than her, asking her how she was “paying for the car now” and “how are you going to pay for a lawyer,” she told Daily Mail.
The police showed up at their door several times, but he thought his doctor status helped keep them at bay.
“He hid behind his white coat and got away with so many things,” he told the outlet.
“Just because he wears scrubs and he’s a doctor doesn’t mean he’s a good person.”
He believes Wan is looking for an assassin after he tells a colleague about his drinking habit.
The 54-year-old doctor was sentenced to more than seven years in prison last week after he admitted to the plot and pleaded guilty in October.
Despite all that, Tonya has allowed Wan to maintain a relationship with their daughter while he is in prison.
“I never want him to be angry with his father. You know, I never wanted that for him. I want to protect his name, as a father his image in his head.”
Wan has since apologized to Tonya, after the judge reprimanded him for not doing so at the Jan 18 sentencing.
“I am truly sorry that you are in this position. I see now that I have hurt you beyond repair. I hope you find someone who can treat you well,” he wrote in a Jan. 22 email from prison.
