Moment unruly crowd sets off fireworks, attacks cops during Connecticut street takeover

Shocking video shows the moment a group of unruly teenagers shoot fireworks at a police cruiser and start attacking police as dangerous road takeovers hit at least four Connecticut towns over the weekend.

Footage released from one of the takeovers in Milford on Saturday showed dozens of attendees throwing fireworks at police and onlookers as sparks flew in all directions.

It also shows an officer trying to disperse the crowd, when a young man pushes a shopping cart at him and throws an M-80 in the street.

At one point, some people even started jumping on the hood of the police vehicle.

Police said an officer at the scene was even hit, punched, and injured by an unknown object thrown at his head.

The unidentified police officer was hospitalized with minor injuries, but has since been released, Fox 61 reported.

Shortly before the incident, the same group of people – including residents of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Vermont – staged another takeover in Derby.

Footage from the event showed fireworks raining down on police and civilians, and exploding in a smoke-filled haze as civilians were trapped waiting in their cars to escape.

“They have no respect, certainly not law enforcement, but they also have no respect for civilians,” Lt. Justin Stanko with the Derby Police Department told Fox 61.

He added that after the group was done in Milford, it moved to West Haven, where four adults and two teenagers were handcuffed after again throwing fireworks at police officers and refusing to obey orders to disperse.

Police now believe the unruly mob started rampaging in Shelton, where local police said they knew the takeover was being planned in advance and coordinated a multi-agency response, including the FBI and Connecticut State Police.

“We started here and set the plan, so we’re ready when they get here and move in with them,” Police Chief Shawn Sequeira told WNTH.

“When they get together, it’s a different situation.”

When officers arrived at the scene in Shelton, they said they were faced with more than 500 cars. They ticketed some drivers and towed some cars.

But the group dispersed when police began cracking down, and moved to other locations in North Haven, Orange, and Derby, before returning to Shelton.

Officials in West Haven also said they expect to make more arrests in connection with the takeover as they comb through video taken at the scene. Milford Police

In North Haven, police said holiday shoppers were stuck in a parking lot with no way out as the takeover unfolded at about 8 p.m. Friday night.

“Interstate 91 was also backed up in both directions for over a mile,” North Haven police said in a Facebook post, adding that they were having difficulty responding to calls for service — including medical emergencies and assaults — at the time.

“Any attempt to take over the streets or large-scale events that block the roads, denying our citizens access to public safety, will not be tolerated,” the police department vowed.

“We will continue to investigate this matter and hold all parties involved accountable.”

Officials in West Haven also said they expect to make more arrests in connection with the takeover as they comb through video taken at the scene, and in Milford, police are asking for help in identifying those involved in the attack on the police officer.

Meanwhile, Shelton police say they are working to prevent any future takeovers by checking social media, reviewing tips, and staying in touch with local and federal police agencies.
