‘Most educated’ state revealed in new report — and it’s not New York

Massachusetts has been named the “most educated” state in the country – handily beating out New York, which didn’t crack the top 10 in the new study.

The state of New England, home to elite college institutions such as Harvard University and MIT, topped the rankings conducted by researchers at WalletHub.

Following Massachusetts, personal finance companies determined Vermont, Maryland, Connecticut and Colorado rounded out the top five.

New York had a more respectable showing at 15, trailing Montana and Illinois, 14 and 13, respectively.

Neighboring New Jersey took 7th place just behind Virginia.

WalletHub focuses on two key factors – educational attainment and quality of education – which have been examined through 18 related metrics.

Analysts focused on the degree to which adults aged 25 and over in each state had from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree to determine educational attainment.

Montana has the highest percentage of high school diploma holders while Massachusetts has the highest percentage of bachelor’s degree and also degree or professional degree holders.

To think about the quality of education, the number of data points is more comprehensive, including the quality of school and college systems, students enrolled in top universities, as well as graduation rates and test scores in each state.

The presence of free community colleges and achievement gaps in each state are also considered.

“Getting a good education does not guarantee high future earnings and better opportunities, but there is a definite correlation,” WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe said in a statement.

“It is certainly worth living in one of the most educated states, which offers high quality learning from childhood to university level. That’s especially true if you plan to raise children.”

Speaking of kids, WalletHub did a separate analysis last month and determined that Massachusetts is also the best state to raise a family. New York took 5th place.
