Moviegoer disgusted as couple rests bare feet on seats in front of them: ‘Nasy s–t’

Tourists are often surprised by how barefoot we are in this part of the world – on the streets, in supermarkets and in cafes.

But what about cinema?

A Scottish tourist snapped a picture of a moviegoer in bare feet and took to the New Zealand subreddit to ask what was going on.

They said the couple put their feet up on the chair in front of them, which was empty.

“It’s weird to see people walking around town barefoot but I respect that, it’s comfortable, let the dog out,” the Scotsman wrote. “I’m sure it’s good for the shape and health of auld feet.

“But this seems maddening to me, the next unfortunate soul to sit in the front seat will have the remains of these two pongs hovering over their heads for 120 minutes of running time.

“If this was Glasgow, someone would throw a bottle of coke/steal an iPhone behind his head before his feet left his shoes. Is this just a cultural difference?”

Locals are quick to inform travelers that walking around barefoot is common in the summer, but putting your feet up on the headrests of public chairs is not widely accepted.

“Putting your feet on the headrest – shoes or no shoes – is bad behaviour,” wrote one.

“The foot on the headrest is a bad thing. Barefoot outside? Very common during summer here,” added another.

“If I wear sandals in the movie, I usually take them off. However, I wouldn’t put it on the headrest in front of me,” explained one Kiwi.

“Welcome. No, it’s not normal. It’s bad behavior,” confirmed a fourth.

Some described the act as “disgusting,” “gross” and “gross.”

As for walking barefoot, Kiwis encourage Scots to try it.

“My American family came to NZ and thought the barefoot thing was weird too. It’s normal here in NZ!” one said.

“I went the other way (South Africa to Florida before coming to NZ) and the first time I went out in public barefoot I had people running up to me in shock telling me how dangerous it was,” wrote another.

“My partner ended up in Scotland when he was a kid in the summer, running around in bare feet. An old woman stopped her car and gave her £10 ($12) to buy shoes, even though she was poor. His father is an airline pilot,” a third person shared.
