Murdered Texas cheerleader Lizbeth Medina’s family reacts to undocumented migrant’s arrest

The aunt of the slain Texas high school cheerleader, Lizbeth Medina, said the family had never heard of the undocumented immigrant accused of stabbing the teenager – and was also looking for answers as to why he might have committed the murder.

Rafael Romero, a 23-year-old undocumented immigrant living in Texas on an expired visa, had never met his family before the fatal stabbing, the victim’s aunt Ana Medina told The Messenger.

“We don’t know who it is,” Medina said. “We don’t know anything about that person. Nobody knows.”

“He is not anyone we know. That’s the worst part,” the woman added. “We don’t know why, why, why. We have no reason anymore.”

Romero was arrested this weekend and charged with one count of capital murder – but police have yet to reveal a motive for the attack.

The aunt, however, praised Romero’s quick arrest, saying she was relieved that he would not be able to harm anyone else.

“I am happy that justice has been done and my nephew is in peace,” he said. “He wouldn’t do this to anyone else. That person is in prison where he should be.”

Lizbeth Medina was found by her mother stabbed to death in her bathtub. ABC 13 Rafael Medina, 23, was arrested Saturday on murder charges in Schulenburg, Texas.

On Dec. 5, Lizbeth Medina, a 16-year-old student at Edna High School, was found dead in a bathtub in her family’s apartment by her mother, Jacqueline Medina, who went looking for her after the girl missed the Christmas parade, where she was supposed to march with the entire squad. cheers.

“I decided to go find him. And I kept calling his phone non-stop, and it would take me straight to voicemail,” the grieving mother previously told Fox News Digital.

“It wasn’t until I went to the toilet that I called my friend to come help me find him — that’s when I [saw] his feet, and he was in the bathtub. So I opened the curtains. He has,” Medina said.

Edna Police Chief Rick Boone revealed Monday that the teenager had been stabbed to death.

The teenager’s brutal slaying sent shockwaves through Edna — a small town of 5,500 people about 100 miles southwest of Houston.

On Saturday, local police and Texas Rangers acting on a tip arrested Romero at his family home in the town of Schulenburg.

They also seized items from his silver Ford Taurus that they said linked him to the murder.

Romero had been in the US illegally after overstaying his visa, Chief Boone said.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on the suspect because of his undocumented status, police said.

Romero’s bond was set by the magistrate at $2 million.
