Nana Patekar was born as ‘Vishwanath Patekar’ on Monday, 1 January 1951 (age 68 years; as on 2019) in Murud-Janjira, Bombay State (now Maharashtra). His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He did his schooling from Samarth Vidyalaya, Dadar West, Mumbai. After that, he attended Bandra School of Art (now LS Raheja School of Art) in Mumbai. He obtained a Diploma in Commercial Art from Sir JJ Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai.

Nana Patekar’s father, Gajanan Patekar is a textile businessman and his mother, Nirmala Patekar is a housewife.
His parents had seven children; 5 of them died. His two brothers’ names are Ashok and Dilip Patekar. Nana married Neelkanti Patekar (former bank officer, actor, and producer) in 1978.
Nana broke up with his wife Neelkanti and later got into a relationship with actress Manisha Koirala.
He then got into a relationship with actress, Ayesha Jhulka.
He has a son named Malhar Patekar. He also had another son, who died when he was 2 years old.
Career
He started his career as a commercial artist and visualizer at Strusa Advertising. He then quit his job to do theater. He made his acting debut with the Bollywood film “Gaman (1978).”
He made his Marathi film debut with the film “Sinhasan” in 1979.
He made his directorial debut with the film “Prahaar: The Final Attack” in 1991.
He made his debut as a producer with the 2016 film “Natsamrat.”
He has also done playback singing in the films Yeshwant (1997), Wajood (1998) and Aanch (2003).
Controversy
- In 2008, during the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss,” Tanushree Dutta alleged that Nana Patekar had sexually harassed her. After ten years, in 2018, he raised the matter again during the MeeToo Movement in India and filed an FIR against Nana Patekar on October 6, 2018.
- In 2014, he slammed the extension of parole to Sanjay Dutt, who was convicted by the Supreme Court of illegal possession of arms in connection with the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. He subsequently vowed never to work with him again.
- After the Uri attack in 2016, Nana, while supporting a ban on Pakistani artistes stated,
I don’t know anything else but my country. An artist is very small in front of a nation. As artists, we have no value when it comes to the country. I am in the army and have spent two and a half years there. I know who our biggest hero is. No one can be a greater warrior than our Javanese. Our Javanese are our true heroes. We actors are trivial and unimportant. Please don’t pay attention to what we say.”

Facts
- He likes to write, shoot guns, travel, travel, and cook.
- When he was in the seventh grade, he was very naughty. Because of that, he was sent to his mother’s sister’s house in Mumbai. A year later, her aunt packed her bags and sent her back to Murud because her children were getting spoiled under Nana’s influence.
- His father loved watching plays, plays and Tamasha (a folk form of Marathi theatre). So Nana used to travel from Mumbai to Murud and participate in plays to get her father’s attention.
- He started acting at the age of 5 and has worked in Marathi theater for a long time, performing in various award-winning plays including Hamidabaichi Kothi and Purush before moving into Marathi film and television.
- When Nana was in the ninth grade, her father was cheated and lost his business, so, Nana had to start working to earn a living. He meets a man named GS Tiwari, who gives him a job to paint movie posters. He gets, Rs.35 a month and a meal a day as payment for doing the work.
- Nana joined a theater group called Avishkar, run by Sulbah and Aarvind Deshpande. He won his first prize while playing with them.
- He praised Smita Patil for her entry into Bollywood. Smita knew him from Pune, and it was she who introduced him to Ravi Chopra. Talking about Smita, she said,
Smita Patil is the reason I got into films. He kept telling me to get into films but I said I am happy doing theater, I don’t like films. Today, when I look back, I don’t think I disliked movies. Maybe I thought who would take me to the movies? I think it’s complex.”
- When Nana was 28, she lost her father, and within two and a half years of that, she lost her first child.
- In an Interview, Nana revealed that she faced discrimination during her early days in Bollywood for not being handsome. In addition, he said,
Main janta hoon ki main khubsoorat nahiin hoon (I know I’m not pretty). But I want to make my presentation beautiful. They should speak for you. Always let your work speak for itself. It doesn’t matter how many interviews you give, or how much you are written about. it’s often the performance that matters.”
- He used to criticize the Filmfare Awards jury for its award management, until, he won the award for Best Actor for the film “Krantiveer” in 1995. In his award acceptance speech, he cried and said,
I know I don’t look like an actor. I have the appearance of a laborer, yet I have received this award today. I am happy that today I am one of you. Until now, I used to feel that Filmfare Awards can be bought. Now that I’ve received one, I know it can’t be bought. Everyone thinks the same. If you don’t win it, you end up saying they must buy it. What can we do? After all, we are only human…”
- He was involved with the ‘People’s Peace Movement’ during the 1992 Bombay riots, despite having close ties to the Shiv Sena (a right-wing pro-Marathi and Hindu nationalist party active mainly in the state of Maharashtra).
- Nana admitted that Bal Thackrey (politician and founder of Shiv Sena) was very close to him and asked him to contest the elections on his party’s ticket. However, he denied his association with any political party.
- To perfect his role for “Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991),” he underwent rigorous military training for three years. In the early 90s, he was given the honorary rank of captain. He also served with the Indian Army, including serving in the Kargil War (May 3-July 26, 1999).
- His son Malhar played the role of young Nana Patekar in the film “Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991).”
- Nana, in an interview, revealed that she celebrated her son’s birthday at an orphanage.
- He met his wife, Neelkanti while working in a theatre. He and Nana have acted together in many dramas. His debut film as an actor was “Atmavishwas (1989).”
- He considers himself a simple Indian citizen and justifies it by living in a 1 BHK apartment with his mother. He believed in living in moderation and said,
I didn’t add to my needs at all. My needs are the same. If you come to my house, you will be surprised. My house is 750 square feet, we have bought it for ‘Rs.1.1 Lakh, but till today I live there alone.”
- Even after becoming a famous actor, he used to hang out with his friends at Mahim Bar and drink alcohol until he passed out.
- Being an atheist, he still celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi, only because his father used to celebrate it and after his father’s death, his mother insisted on continuing the same.
- Nana once revealed that she is a chain smoker. Talking about his smoking habit, he said,
I used to smoke 60 cigarettes a day until I was 56 years old. But then I just threw it away and left it.”
- During the filming of the final scene of the film, “Parinda,” Nana suffered burns and was unable to work for almost a year. After a year, when they remade the scene, Nana had a fight with the film’s director, Vidhu Vinod Chopra because the incident was still in her head and she didn’t want Vidhu to use the rubber solution that caused her to burn early. A fight between Nana and Vidhu turns into a fistfight.
- In 2015, Nana started a non-governmental organization called ‘Naam Foundation’ along with Makarand Anaspure. The organization works to help farmers in the drought-prone areas of Vidarbha and Marathwada in Maharashtra. In 2015, he distributed a check of Rs. 15,000, to farming families in Vidarbha, Latur, and Osmanda regions.
