Three former staff for Rep. Nancy Mace anonymously skewered their old boss as an attention-seeking opportunist eager to maximize his national exposure.
Mace, who considers himself a lunatic on issues like abortion, was thrust into the national spotlight last month when he joined the rebellion against former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.)
The former employee appeared unhappy with his work to unseat McCarthy, who has raised funds for the South Carolina Republican in the past.
“He talks about ‘principle’ and ‘standing up for the people,'” a former Mace aide told the Daily Beast, “but at the end of the day, all he cares about is maintaining his weird C-list celebrity status by any means necessary.”
When asked about the report, a Mace spokesperson told The Post: “No comment on the trash.”
Mace was one of eight Republican rebels who rejected McCarthy in an effort led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), a man he slammed earlier this year for blocking McCarthy’s bid for speaker. Mace also ripped him for raising funds from the venture at the time.

But after joining his rebellion, he also raised funds to oust the speaker, defending the move by pointing to attacks on him. Mace’s actions confused many observers at the time.
“A lot of journalists, commentators and politicians have just been scratching their heads looking for Nancy Mace’s big plan,” a former staffer told the outlet. “Stop looking for logic in Mace’s actions, because there isn’t any.”
Mace, who hails from South Carolina’s Lowcountry, was first elected to Congress in 2020 after failing to capture the seat of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) six years earlier in 2014.
After going downstairs, staff were reportedly given a 2021 strategy memo, which some former employees claim he wrote himself, outlining the image he wanted to cultivate.
“Nancy is ‘thoughtful’ and ‘diligent’ on issues important to the Lowcountry,” the memo said, according to the report.

The 2021 memo further branded “NATIONAL NANCY” as “THE freshman thought leader on federal issues.”
Responsibilities for his team are featured in the staff handbook – which helpfully claims he also helps the author – instructing the communications director to send out a press release a day, and instructing their communications team to book them on national TV channels one to three times a day. a day, or at least nine times a week, a former employee told the outlet.
“It’s not normal for members to prioritize media and communication over actual law like that,” a former staffer told the outlet.
“In my experience with and in other offices, communication works to promote what members are doing legislatively. In Mace’s office, the law works to get him more media opportunities.”

Mace’s team quickly disputed the character of his “disgruntled” former staff.
“Congressman Mace was attacked for taking a strong stand against the Washington establishment. They didn’t like the votes he took recently, so now they want to silence him. Good luck,” spokesman William Hampton told The Daily Beast.
The lawmaker insisted that the establishment was seeking revenge against him for his decision to oust McCarthy.
While the three staffers who spoke to the Daily Beast were not identified, one former staffer, Natalie Johnson, publicly slammed her old boss during a speaker kerfuffle last month.
“Ma’am, you bought a multi-million dollar house one block from the Capitol within six months of being elected and then lied to claim to live in your office. Please,” he wrote in a post featuring Mace’s pledge not to “bend the knee to DC.”

“I have a close relationship with, and am very loyal to, everyone I’ve worked with. Except for one,” he added later.
Mace claimed that the reason for his decision to oppose McCarthy was his failure to uphold his commitment to put his legislation on women’s issues to a vote.
He denied that.

Mace’s coastal inland district in the Palmetto State could be reconfigured amid a redistricting case pending before the Supreme Court.
The congressman praised the elevation of Mike Johnson (R-La.) to the post of speaker late last month.
