In 2001, Kalyan began a live-in relationship with co-star Renu Desai, and the couple had a son, Akira Nandan, in 2004. In June 2007, Nandini filed a bigamy case against Kalyan, accusing him of remarrying without divorcing her. Kalyan denied the allegations stating that he is not married to Renu Desai. A magistrate’s court in Visakhapatnam acquitted Kalyan of the charges due to insufficient evidence. In July 2007, Kalyan started divorce proceedings by filing a divorce petition in the family court in Visakhapatnam. He said that Nandini had left him soon after their marriage, but his lawyer denied this claim. In August 2008, their divorce was finalized with a one-time settlement of ₹5 crores as alimony paid by Kalyan. In 2010, Nandini reportedly got married to a doctor named Krishna Reddy.
