Biography/Wiki
Nargis was born on 1 June 1929 as Fatima Rashid in Kolkata (West Bengal). After some time, his family moved to Allahabad from West Bengal.
Her mother who is a classical singer introduced Nargis to the world of cinema. Although Nargis had a desire to become a doctor, but following her mother’s wishes, she decided to build her career in the Indian film industry. Her films broke the records of the history of the big screen and touched the heights of the sky because of her extraordinary beauty and extraordinary talent.
She fell in love with actor Raj Kapoor. But, when Raj Kapoor refuses to continue his relationship with Nargis after an affair with him, Nargis despairs, but somehow, she gathers courage and decides to focus on her acting career.
During the shooting of the film ‘Mother India,’ a fire broke out, and Nargis was saved from the raging flames by actor Sunil Dutt. After this incident, she and Sunil Dutt became close to each other and later, they tied the knot on 11 March 1958. In time, she gave birth to a son and two daughters.
She, along with her husband also founded the ‘Ajanta Arts Cultural Troupe’ which was used to entertain the Indian soldiers stationed on remote border lines. As he had a desire to serve the sick and bereaved, he became the patron of the ‘Spastic Society of India’ to work for spastic children.
During 1980 to 1981, Nargis was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. But, unfortunately, at this time Nargis was a victim of Pancreatic Cancer and could not continue this service due to her severe health problems. He went for treatment at ‘Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’ in New York. But the disease was incurable, and he was brought back to India where he was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
On May 2, 1981, he fell into a coma and lost all hope of life. On May 3, 1981, this great Bollywood actor bid farewell to this mortal world forever. When Nargis’ body was buried at Badakabarastan in Marine Lines, Mumbai, the place was renamed ‘Nargis Dutt Road’ in her memory.
He had a desire to see his son on the silver screen, but, Sanjay’s debut film ‘Rocky’ was released on May 7, 1981, just four days after his death.
Family, Caste & Husband
His father Mohanchand Uttamchand Tyagi was a wealthy Hindu Brahmin from Rawalpindi, Punjab (now in Pakistan), who later, converted to Islam and took the name, Abdul Rashid. His mother Jaddanbai, was an Indian classical singer.
Nargis was romantically involved with co-star Raj Kapoor, during his films ‘Awara’ and ‘Shree 420.’ But when Raj Kapoor denied divorcing his wife Krishna, he broke off his relationship with her.

According to some reports, when actor Sunil Dutt saved her life from a raging fire on the sets of ‘Mother India,’ she felt deep love for him and decided to marry him. On 11 March 1958, she married Sunil Dutt and changed her religion from Islam to Hinduism. After marriage, she changed her name from Nargis to Nirmala Dutt.
Over time, she gave birth to a son Sanjay Dutt (Bollywood superhit star), and two daughters Priya (a member of the Indian Parliament) and Namrata who married Indian actor Kumar Gaurav.
Career
At the age of six, Nargis made her career debut with the film ‘Talashe Haq’ in 1935. As a child artist, she worked in her second film ‘Madam Fashion’ directed by her mother Jaddanbai.
At the age of 14, he acted in the film ‘Taqdeer,’ directed and produced by Mehboob Khan in 1943. After this, he performed in various super hit films such as ‘Barsaat’ (1949), ‘Andaz’ (1949), ‘Awaara’ (1951), ‘Deedar’ (1951’re’1952h), ‘Showri’ (1951), ‘1952h. 6) and more.
In 1957, she won the ‘Filmfare Award’ for Best Actress for the film ‘Mother India,’ which was also nominated for an Oscar. According to Indian producer and writer Baburao Patel, there is no other actress in the world who is capable of portraying the role of Birju’s mother in ‘Mother India’ as beautifully as Nargis has ever played.
In 1958, Nargis became the first Indian actress to receive the ‘Padma Shri Award.’ In the same year, after her marriage to Sunil Dutt, she decided to give up her acting career and performed in several films. In 1967, she won the ‘Filmfare Best Actress Award’ and the ‘National Film Award’ for her last film ‘Raat Aur Din.’ She is also the first woman to win the ‘National Film Award.’
For her outstanding performance in the Indian Film Industry, Nargis won several other awards. - According to rumors Motilal Nehru, the father of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, is said to be Nargis Dutt’s maternal grandfather because her mother Jaddanbai is the child of Nargis’ grandmother Dilipa Devi and Motilal.
- When Nargis first met Sunil Dutt on the sets of Bimal Roy’s ‘Do Bigha Zamin’, she was a successful actress, earning 50000₹ for a film, while Sunil Dutt was an aspiring actor, receiving only 10 or twelve rupees a month as an actor.
- Her hobbies are dancing, traveling, listening to music, and playing golf.
