Natalie Woods began acting as a child star at the age of four, and at the age of eight, she starred in Miracle on 34th Street in 1972. Natalie began her screen presence as a very thorough teenage actress. Performers under 18 are required by California law to spend at least three hours in a classroom. ‘I always felt bad because the team was waiting for 3 hours,’ Wood recalls. I ran to the set as soon as the class was over. Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz always remembered Natalie and stated, ‘I’ve never met a brighter moppet!’
Natalie graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1956 and earned a contract with Warner Brothers. Wood had greater success as a television performer, receiving strong ratings and critical acclaim. When Elia Kazan auditioned Natalie for Splendor in the Grass, he asked her what made her tick. Wood said, ‘I was being psychoanalyzed by (her husband) Robert J. Wagner.’ ‘Well, that worked!’ wrote Kazan afterwards. His unfinished sci-fi film ‘Brainstorm’ was released posthumously.
