Navalny aides voice fears for his health after prison faint

Aides to jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny said on Friday they were very worried about his health and had not been able to contact him for three days.

Navalny, 47, is imprisoned in a prison colony east of Moscow and has been sentenced to more than 30 years on what he says were trumped-up charges to cover up his criticism of President Vladimir Putin.

His aides said Navalny’s lawyer had been standing all day outside the colony but was refused entry to see him, and he did not appear at a scheduled judicial hearing on his case.

“We have learned that last week he suffered a serious health-related incident. Navalny’s life is at great risk. He is in complete isolation now,” Maria Pevchikh, chairwoman of the Navalny Anti-Corruption Foundation, posted on the X social media platform.

Navalny’s spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh said prison staff dropped him off last week after he became dizzy and lay on the floor of his cell in what she said looked like a “hunger faint.”

“It’s now the third day we don’t know where he is. Before that, there was at least an occasional letter from him, albeit censored, but no letter all week,” he wrote on X.

Navalny has long-term health problems, having survived being poisoned with a nerve agent in Siberia in 2020. The Kremlin denies trying to kill him and refuses to comment on his case, saying he was treated like any other prisoner.
