UP meeting don Ramesh Kalia
identification
Ramesh Kalia is a notorious fraudster based in Lucknow, who mostly used to extort huge amounts of money from contractors and builders of Uttar Pradesh. In 2004, when the Samajwadi Party was in power in UP, the biggest challenge before CM Mulayam Singh Yadav was to curb the rising crime levels in the state. Especially, in its capital Lucknow, which was then in the grip of a crime wave. A number of criminals including, Ramesh Kalia (once one of the most dreaded Mafias in the state) have become a headache for the UP Government. Kalia’s violence among the public was so high that no one dared to testify against him. In September 2004, Kalia was allegedly involved in the killing of Samajwadi Party MLC Ajit Singh at his birthday party. The news shocked the state, raising questions about the government’s standards for the safety and security of its citizens. This was the time when IPS officer Navniet Sekera, who had led the encounter of more than 40 criminals was called to Lucknow from Muzaffarnagar, to curb the graph of criminal activities.
A Dramatic Encounter
This incident is from February 2005, when Kalia had demanded an extortion amount of five lakh from a local builder and had contacted him at a house under construction in Neelmatha area of Lucknow. Kalia had prepared her goons everywhere around the place. Now, Navniet Sekera and his policemen had to use a unique trick to reach Kalia. Sekera prepares a police script disguised as a wedding procession (Western) when there is no way to reach his base. According to the ruse, a female constable was dressed as a bride and made to sit in a doli, while an inspector posed as a groom. A team of armed policemen with inspectors were part of the procession. With a band-baaja, the procession reached Ramesh Kalia’s base at Nilmatha. In the operation that lasted about 20 minutes, more than 50 bullets were exchanged between the police and Kalia’s group; leaving dreaded thug Ramesh Kalia dead.
